Inspiring The Future Generation

STEM in the UK

Northrop Grumman recognises the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to the future of the UK. It is an area that we are passionate about as we believe inspiring future generations to engage in STEM subjects is not only crucial for a young person's educational development, but also to the future of UK industry.

Across the UK we are seeing concerning statistics regarding the number of students who are interested in STEM careers. This shortage of science-based talent in our workplaces and universities also represents a serious potential problem for our industry. Science-based expertise is at the heart of our high-technology culture, society and economy.

It is vital to give young people the tools and information they need to make informed decisions about their future career opportunities, and to ensure that they understand how important STEM is in our daily lives.

The Northrop Grumman Foundation provides unique education experiences related to STEM for students and teachers. The Foundation supports diverse and sustainable programmes that enhance the education experience for students and provide teachers with the training and tools they need to be successful in the classroom.

How do we do this?

  • By raising the awareness of career opportunities at local careers fairs, STEM days and events in schools within the communities where we have employees located.
  • Through involvement at large STEM events across the UK demonstrating that studying STEM subjects can be fun, creative and empowering.
  • By working in partnership with a wide variety of external organisations, including Government, to support and deliver STEM engagement and activities.

UK STEM Outreach Programme

CyberCenturion

CyberCenturion is the UK's first team-based cyber security contest specifically designed to attract 12-18 year olds. The competition, led by Northrop Grumman and delivered in partnership with Cyber Security Challenge UK, aims to engage and inspire talented young people with an interest in cyber as a way to address the national skills gap in STEM subjects and encourage careers in cyber security.

CyberCenturion

CyberCenturion is the UK version of the proven CyberPatriot competition, part of a major US national youth cyber STEM education programme. Eighty percent of those who have taken part in CyberPatriot now plan to pursue a higher education course in cyber or STEM.

STAAR

STAAR logo

Northrop Grumman's Summer Time Advanced Aerospace Residency (STAAR) programme is a unique, week-long residential summer camp open to students across the UK aged 14-15 years, with an interest in aerospace engineering.

The STAAR summer camp is an immersive, week-long residential programme for Year 10 students and consists of hands-on activities designed to provide a unique experience that will help them to understand more about advanced aerospace systems engineering and encourage them to take up further studies and consider careers in STEM-related fields.

Students participate in activities such as rocket building and launching, experiencing weightlessness in an astronaut-training simulator and simulating space travel preparation. The teachers attend the Space Academy for Educators, a programme designed to provide them with the tools and resources to enhance how they demonstrate STEM concepts in their classrooms.

University Partnerships

Northrop Grumman has partnerships with a number of UK universities.

At Plymouth University, Northrop Grumman supports the Tamar Engineering Project which provides one-to-one mentoring and financial support for talented and ambitious engineering students whose background or circumstances might be a barrier to higher education advancement and success.

Northrop Grumman also provides grants to support a range engineering activities at Birmingham and Southampton Universities.
