Northrop Grumman has appointed Andrew Tyler chief executive for the UK and Europe, effective July 1. In this new position, he will play a leading role in supporting the company’s current programmes, developing strategies for growth and identifying new business opportunities for the company’s activities in the U.K. and Europe, including NATO countries.
Tyler joins Northrop Grumman from Siemens’ Marine Current Turbines where he was chief executive officer. Prior to that he was chief operating officer at Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) in the U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD), the organisation responsible for the procurement and support of all the equipment used by the British Armed Forces.

Current UK programmes include:
- NATO Cyber Security – Finmeccanica, through SELEX Elsag and VEGA, together with partner Northrop Grumman is providing the NATO Computer Incident Response Capability (NCIRC), an extensive managed service which will provide cyber security and information assurance to around 50 NATO sites and headquarters throughout 28 countries worldwide.
- Brunei C4ISR – Provision of Joint Operations Centre (JOC) command and control capability for the Royal Brunei Armed Forces including integrated C4ISR headquarters system and deployable JOC as well as training and in-country support.
- E-3D Sentry AWACS – Whole life support for the RAF’s fleet of E-3D Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft based at RAF Waddington
- DIRCM – Supply, maintenance, repair (in strategic partnership with Selex) of Directional Infra-red Counter-Measure (DIRCM) systems installed on a range of RAF aircraft types
- LAIRCM Support – In-service support for Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) that protect large fixed-wing transport and other aircraft
- CUTLASS – Development and manufacture of next generation unmanned ground vehicles for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
- IDENT 1 – Core systems integration and provision of the IDENT1 biometric identification service for the Police
- London Ambulance – Design, development and implementation of the new computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system for the London Ambulance Service to handle emergency calls and ambulance movements
- Type 45 – Design, development, supply and through life support of the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for all UK Type 45 Destroyers
- Astute, Queen Elizabeth Class – Integrated Bridge System for new aircraft carriers and the IPMS for Astute
- Air Traffic Management – Provides air traffic control voice communications and nationwide ground-to-air communications system for the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) connecting pilots with air-traffic controllers
- NATO Command & Control Systems – Hardware and software support to NATO C3 Agency for the Maritime Command and Control Information System (MCCIS) installed in NATO maritime headquarters
- C4I – Command and Control for PC (C2PC) and Interoperable C4I Services (ICS) used in 40-countries with 100,000 users. User interface/core functionality for MoD’s Joint Operations Command System (JOCS) and Royal Navy Command Support System (RNCSS)
- Cybersecurity – partner with BT developing a cybersecurity test range under the Technology Strategy Board funded SATURN research programme. Northrop Grumman will build the cyber test range at its Fareham facility.
