Diaphragm Tanks

Elastomeric diaphragms are used in tanks for positive expulsion of Hydrazine on board spacecraft. Northrop Grumman has manufactured over 1000 diaphragm tanks for space flight application, with tanks from 9" to 40" in diameter and up to 28,000 cubic inches of volume.

The combination of Northrop Grumman’s precision, ultra-pure diaphragms, exclusive retention mechanism, extensive girth closure welding expertise, and unmatched industry experience results in a family of Northrop Grumman diaphragm tanks that represents the space industry standard.

Northrop Grumman offers the most complete product line of Hydrazine positive expulsion elastomeric diaphragm tanks available in the space industry. The advantages of Northrop Grumman's diaphragm tanks over other positive expulsion tanks include:

Tank

Shown on the left is a 40 inch diameter 2/1 spheroid diaphragm tank for hydrazine, Northrop Grumman P/N 80407-1. The Tank has a total volume of 28,144 cu. in. and has a 314 psig MEOP. This tank family had been supplied to numerous spacecraft programs including TDRSS, X-38, EOS , TRMM, ETS-VII, and SOHO.

Shown on the left is a 16.5 inch diameter spherical diaphragm tank for hydrazine, Northrop Grumman's P/N 80275-1. The tank is qualified for 83 lbs (1,955 cu.in) of hydrazine at an MEOP of 435 psig. This tank family has been supplied to spacecraft programs including GPS II, Titan, Landsat, Mars 98, and many others.

Shown on the left is a 22 inch diameter spherical diaphragm tank for hydrazine, Northrop Grumman's P/N 80200-1. This tank is similar to the Northrop Grumman P/N 80298 series for storage of 160 lbs of hydrazine at 485 psig MEOP. This is Northrop Grumman's most popular size of diaphragm tanks, having been supplied to numerous programs.


Diaphragm Tank Sizes

ATK has several diaphragm tank size families. Each family contains diaphragm tanks utilizing the same diaphragm press dies and the same forging dies. Tanks within each family have different inlet and outlet tube configurations, different mounting configurations, or are acceptance tested to different levels and requirements.

By utilizing an existing tank design from a particular tank family or a close derivative of an existing tank, a spacecraft program can save considerable non-recurring costs for tooling, drawings, planning, NC tapes, and the many other hardware and software items required for the successful fabrication of a high quality spacecraft propellant tank.

In addition to these standard tank families, ATK offers several tanks that have been specifically designed for a particular size. Reference the tank data sheets for further information on all ATK diaphragm tanks.
