2012 Northrop Grumman Women's Conference Drives Top Performance and Underscores Engagement and Diversity and Inclusion

2012 Northrop Grumman Women's Conference Four hundred women from across the company join together for networking and professional development opportunities and to hear engaging presentations by senior leaders at the 2012 Northrop Grumman Women's Conference.

The two-day conference, hosted by Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president of Corporate Responsibility, welcomed 400 of Northrop Grumman's high performing female employees from all levels of the corporation. Now in its fifth year, the event was established to promote diversity and inclusion, leadership and engagement, and to inspire Northrop Grumman women to build and strengthen relationships with colleagues from across the company. "Achieving Top Performance," was the conference theme and clearly reinforced the company's objective of achieving and sustaining top performance in a challenging and uncertain market environment.

Evers-Manly explained, "This is a conference with a purpose," and participants began the first day either volunteering in the local community, enhancing their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education outreach skills, meeting with female Congressional leaders or engaging in discussions centered around women's health issues. The diverse set of activities included gardening at the Talmar Gardens and Horticultural Therapy Center, a visit to the U.S. Capitol, and cleaning-up the Baltimore wetlands in partnership with The Living Classroom.

The conference opened on Wednesday evening with remarks from Aulana Peters, one of two female members of the Northrop Grumman Board of Directors. Peters discussed the importance of diversity, commended the company on its promotion of women in leadership positions -- calling it "the new normal" -- and challenged the audience to be top performers. "I hope the day will come soon when events like this one are so commonplace that they are no longer considered best practices, but the only practice," Peters said.

Peters also commended Wes Bush on his leadership, a segue for the next agenda item, "A Conversation with Wes Bush." Darryl Fraser, corporate vice president of Communications, led Bush, chairman, CEO and president, through a series of business and personal questions. Bush noted that culture is an integral part of being a top performing company and that values, interactions among employees, and our ability to leverage the full capability of the enterprise are all important aspects of that culture. He also emphasized employee engagement and reviewed initial results from Northrop Grumman's most recent employee engagement survey.

Bush addressed the challenging budget environment and urged all employees to focus on the opportunity the situation brings, not the uncertainty. "There is an opportunity for innovation right now, right in front of us, and our job is to determine how we leverage our capabilities to meet it," he said.

Before answering questions from the audience, Bush talked about his personal journey, jobs he liked and didn't like, and the experiences they brought him. He encouraged participants to take advantage of opportunities that made sense for them.
