The Doolittle Raid was one of the most significant "counter-punches" ever. It changed the way that the Japanese thought of their navy being able to protect their "island fortress". Great history here.

The shock of the Doolittle Raid made Japan miscalculate ending in the Battle of Midway. In terms of damage, it was that--more than anything else, that made the Doolittle Raid of such importance.
Gen. Doolittle was "the chairman of the board of TRW Space Technology Laboratories. Doolittle Drive at TRW's Space Park was named in his honor." (from Wikipedia article). TRW is one of the legacy companies purchased by NGC.
