Dr. Christopher J. Bowie

Dr. Bowie is Corporate Director of the Northrop Grumman Analysis Center.
Trained as a historian, Dr. Bowie holds a B.A. from the University of Minnesota and a D.Phil from Oxford University. He joined the RAND Corporation in 1981 as a member of the technical staff, where he worked on nuclear bomber operations, aerial refueling concepts, fighter employment operations, and a variety of air power doctrine and strategy issues. Dr. Bowie left RAND to serve as a member of the Secretary of the Air Force’s personal staff from 1989-1991, for which he was awarded the Exceptional Civilian Service Medal. Dr. Bowie was a co-author of the 1990 vision statement Global Reach-Global Power and several other key Air Force policy statements.
Following this assignment, Dr. Bowie returned to RAND, where he served as Associate Director of the National Security Studies program. While serving in that capacity, he wrote The New Calculus, which examined air power’s changing role in U.S. national security strategy, and Trends in the Global Balance of Air Power, which analyzed historical and projected trends in the world’s air and missile forces.
In 1994, Dr. Bowie joined Northrop Grumman, where he held a variety of management positions at the B-2 Division, Air Combat Systems, Integrated Systems, and Corporate. Some of his publications from this period include The Anti-Access Threat and Theater Air Bases and Future War: What Trends in America’s Post-Cold War Military Conflicts Tell Us About Early 21st Century Warfare.
In 2002, the Air Force selected him for the Senior Executive Service to serve as the Deputy Director for Strategic Planning, Headquarters, United States Air Force. In that capacity, Dr. Bowie helped develop future USAF force structure plans, force structure planning tools, Air Force advocacy and outreach products, divestiture contingency planning, space policy, and a variety of other key long-range planning issues.
Dr. Bowie rejoined Northrop Grumman in February 2005.
