Sowing and Reaping a Greener Future

From cars to copiers, carpets to cell phones, everything was coming up “green” — or, more precisely, greeNG — at Northrop Grumman Space Technology’s 2008 Earth Day celebration in Redondo Beach, Calif.

IT Solutions’ Dee Dee Kelley-Judge (far left) helps Northrop Grumman Space Technology President Alexis Livanos plant “seeds of change” giveaways at the managed print solutions booth.

Attendees explored the new generation of compact wind generators for residential use.

More than a thousand employees immersed themselves in the festival atmosphere, as exhibitors provided helpful information and imaginative ideas for practicing Earth-friendly behaviors at work, at home and in the community.

Representatives from the company’s Facilities, Business Services and Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) organizations were on hand to talk about recent successful initiatives, including the installation of carpeting made from recycled materials, fuel economy improvements and lower emission levels resulting from fleet vehicle rightsizing and a significant pollutant reduction in emissions and greenhouse gases through 9/80 and teleworking, to name a few.

Information Technology teamed up with Xerox to showcase the managed print services initiative, currently under way. This endeavor entails replacing standalone copiers along with networked printers, scanners and fax machines with modern multi-function devices and printers that consume less energy. Moreover, the technologies deployed through this initiative offer innovative features such as the automated detection of service and supply needs. Northrop Grumman Space Technology expects to reduce the amount of power and paper consumed, ultimately saving trees and reducing our carbon footprint.

A variety of exhibits demonstrated that putting green and clean concepts to work does not stop at campus borders. Ways to reduce emissions and expenses at home, for example, were on display with the ZENN (Zero Emission No Noise) neighborhood electric vehicle, demonstrated by EnVironmental Motors, and with wind generators for residential use, showcased by Prevailing Wind Power. And, visitors at the Cell Phones for Soldiers booth learned how recycling their old cell phones can also help our troops abroad keep in touch with their families.
