In the LimeLight - 2010 World Science Festival Showcases the Webb Telescope

JWST
The full-scale model of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), built by Northrop Grumman, makes its next “World Tour” stop in New York City’s Battery Park, as part of the World Science Festival, June 1-6.

Thousands of visitors each day will have free access – from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. – to see up close the tennis court-sized model of NASA’s next generation of major orbiting observatories. The Webb Telescope has already been displayed around the world, visiting sites in France, Ireland, Canada, Germany, and across the U.S.

Catch it if you can!

This special event features a JWST Visitors Center with interactive games and activities, a mini-theater with a simulated environment of the cosmos, and a spectacular stargazing event on Friday evening, June 4, for amateur astronomers and the general public.

Taking its place among the stars

When launched, the Webb Telescope (successor to the Hubble Space Telescope) will be placed in orbit nearly one million miles from Earth. From that vantage point it will look deep into space and further back in time to observe the universe when stars and galaxies were just beginning to form. It also will be instrumental in finding Earth-like planets around other stars and gain more information on dark matter, which comprises nearly 95% of all matter in the universe.
