JWST at the Maryland Science Center

The full-scale model of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), built by Northrop Grumman, makes its next “World Tour” stop at the Maryland Science Center near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Oct. 14-18.
Visitors, including that week’s Baltimore Marathoners and Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) attendees, will have free access each day – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. – to see up close the tennis court-sized model of NASA’s next generation of major orbiting observatories. The Webb Telescope has already been displayed around the world, visiting sites in France, Ireland, Canada, Germany, and across the U.S.
Catch it if you can!
This special event features a JWST “Education Tent” with interactive games and activities, a mini-theater with a simulated environment of the cosmos, and a spectacular stargazing event on Friday evening, Oct. 14, for amateur astronomers and the general public.

The Webb Telescope model will remain on display Oct. 19-26. On Oct. 26, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) will be on hand for a dedication of a permanent Webb Telescope display at the Maryland Science Center.
Taking its place among the stars
When launched, the Webb Telescope (successor to the Hubble Space Telescope) will be placed in orbit nearly one million miles from Earth. From that vantage point it will look deep into space and further back in time to observe the universe when stars and galaxies were just beginning to form. It also will be instrumental in finding Earth-like planets around other stars and gain more information on dark matter, which comprises nearly 95% of all matter in the universe.
