At Northrop Grumman, innovation can happen anywhere. From engineering and manufacturing to finance and business development and beyond, our employees are working together to improve processes and provide world-leading services to our customers. Built specifically with this in mind, the Northrop Grumman Innovation Institute serves as the new home of a diverse pool of talented employees who are all part of the company's Electronic Systems sector. The company provides some of the most advanced research and development in the industry. Their collective mission is to create the leading-edge electronic technologies and solutions demanded by defense and commercial customers.

Collaboration and teamwork

The new office facility features several uniquely-configured collaboration areas where small to medium-sized teams of employees can work together on various advanced technology development projects. The goal is to take people out of conference rooms or dark offices and encourage them to work together in an area that allows for natural light and more free-flowing ideas.

The building also includes a 175-seat conference center, an employee fitness center, and an Internet café, where employees can gather together in an informal setting to discuss particular projects and activities.

The Northrop Grumman Innovation Institute creates the perfect environment for rapid, agile technology development by enabling streamlined communications across small to medium-sized teams, and a collaborative environment to share ideas and solutions with our customers. The new facility isn't just for Northrop Grumman. In order to solve the global security challenges confronting the aerospace and defense industry, the company recognizes that it must embrace the thoughts and talents of people from the educational institutions, government labs, customers, intelligence community and even its competitors.

The Need for Speed

Northrop Grumman remains distinct as a thought leader in the aerospace and defense industry by combining innovative technologies and business practices that address broad mission and enterprise capability requirements. The company goes beyond the traditional, product-oriented technology approach common to the industry.

Irregular warfare has played a significant role in the delivery of products because the threat is changing so rapidly that timeliness is the driving factor. The company must respond to its customers' increased demand for speed. Today, the industry focus is on building more modular, scalable, open architecture systems that can be designed once, and then be modified rapidly to solve different customer problems. Bringing customers in on the front end in a more relaxed, collaborative atmosphere to help better understand and appreciate their requirements will help support these objectives and result in the most innovative, cost-effective solution.

Good Corporate Citizen

The new Northrop Grumman Innovation Institute is an environmentally friendly facility, and energy efficiencies were put in place as part of its original architectural design. As a result, the company anticipates a 50-percent reduction in building water consumption and a 25-percent reduction in energy usage. Environmentally friendly materials were used during the construction process, with 75 percent of all construction waste recycled. The building has qualified for the nationally recognized LEED designation (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which makes the Northrop Grumman Innovation Institute truly a green building.

A Proven Leader in Aerospace

Northrop Grumman has a tremendous history in innovation with many of its products considered to be national assets. The company's accomplishments include the renowned development of state-of-the art sensors for both manned and unmanned air platforms. Its engineers and scientists think about what will happen next and are always looking several years ahead to anticipate customers' needs. They're achieving this by exploring a number of exciting cutting-edge technologies and investing in everything from quantum physics to carbon nanotubes to gallium nitride.

As these emerging fields have opened the door to entirely new possibilities, Northrop Grumman has been and continues to be on the front end of what the future holds. Northrop Grumman is a company of many firsts and the world leader in fire control radar. The company patented the key technologies for the Pulse Doppler radar, which is the basis for all airborne radars in use today. The world's first solid-state radar, the AN/APQ-120, was produced by Northrop Grumman for the F-4E aircraft.

Northrop Grumman's legacy airborne fire control radar technology business has since grown out of its involvement with the F-16 Falcon fighter aircraft, for which the company has produced every fire control radar since the program's launch in the mid-'70s. The company added to its family of multifunction sensors with the introduction of its new Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) designed for retrofit on F-16 fighters and other platforms.

People - The Greatest Asset

People are Northrop Grumman's greatest asset and the company strives to provide employees with a work environment conducive to meeting the collective goals and objectives of the business. Our technology and research and development focus is on developing affordable, lightweight systems that enhance the warfighter's combat capabilities, and our technologists constantly seek to explore new technologies that bridge capability gaps.

Northrop Grumman recognizes the critical national defense importance of the work being done within the walls of the Innovation Institute. Our employees are helping U.S. armed forces and the country's allies realize their vision to provide soldiers a coherent, integrated airborne and ground tactical picture that will be unprecedented in warfare.

The Northrop Grumman Innovation Institute will enable the company's engineers, physicists, and scientists to collaborate under one roof and turn what is considered today's science fiction into tomorrow's reality.
