Environmental Sustainability (greeNG)

Northrop Grumman facility with solar panels

As a global security company, we understand that the conservation of natural resources and the mitigation of environmental impacts are vitally important for the protection of this generation and those to come. Our corporate values strongly support environmental sustainability and our greeNG Program is leading the charge on turning these ideals into action for the company. Through corporate programs and sector executed projects, we are helping to drive long–term affordability and provide value to our customers and shareholders by reducing our environmental footprint and improving operational efficiency.

The importance of environmental sustainability to the company and our leadership is demonstrated by its inclusion as one of the company’s six non-financial performance metrics. This metric is measured in terms of reductions in absolute greenhouse gas emissions and potable water use, and improvement in solid waste diversion. The Policy Committee of our Board of Directors receives periodic updates on the program, performance against these goals, and oversees the program’s alignment with Northrop Grumman's strategic objectives.

The company is committed to achieving our 2020 environmental sustainability goals which include:

  • Reducing absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 30% from 2010 levels;

  • Reducing absolute potable water use 20% from 2014 levels; and

  • Achieving a 70% solid waste diversion rate (percentage of total solid waste that is diverted from landfill).

We are integrating environmental sustainability into our organizational culture, applying a multi-faceted strategy that supports our corporate values and is balanced to drive value creation and performance. To increase and maintain focus on performance, our executives are accountable for achievement of sustainability goals. Environmental Sustainability is one of the company's non-financial corporate performance metrics.

The link between environmental sustainability and executive compensation demonstrates the level of commitment from our Board of Directors and reinforces the role of leadership and engagement throughout Northrop Grumman.

Program Highlights

Renewable Energy

  • The first Northrop Grumman-owned on-site solar power systems were installed and activated in St. Augustine and Melbourne, Florida. The systems generate 0.56 MW of clean power for the two sites.

Solid  Waste

  • The Palmdale Aircraft Integration and Center of Excellence earned Silver-level Zero Waste Certification from the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council, successfully diverting more than 90 percent of its waste from landfill by recycling and composting efforts.

Water Conservation

purple pipes

In 2018, our Redondo Beach, California location successfully connected a municipal reclaimed water line to the cooling towers of three buildings onsite. This project offset potable water usage by 16 million gallons of water per year, which is enough to fill 24 Olympic size swimming pools.

rainwater catch system

A rainwater harvesting system was installed at our Park Air facility in the UK. This system captures rainwater from the facility roof, filters and stores the runoff in a large underground system in the parking lot, and then the water is used for the toilets in the building. This systems saves more than 120,000 gallons per year, which is equivalent to 70 percent of water use at the facility.

Other Activities

electric vehicle charging station

As of 2018, Northrop Grumman provides access to electric vehicle charging stations  at 21 of our sites.  To date, we have installed 91 Level 2 charging stalls to help accommodate the 828 employees utilizing low/no emissions vehicles.

In 2017, we received LEED certification for two of our newly constructed buildings in Florida and Maryland.  To date, we have thirteen LEED certified buildings and two buildings certified under the EPA Energy Star program.  Together, our green building footprint covers more than two million square feet of floor space.
