Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

Northrop Grumman is currently seeking a Principal Research Scientist to join our Health Management Team in our Promontory, UT location.

The Heath Management Team creates physics based models of organic and inorganic material behavior, creates new measurement systems for NDE inspection, and assists other labs with electronics and data acquisition within Propulsion Systems.  We oversee processes of generating laboratory sized samples from solid rocket motors and the subsequent chemical and mechanical testing of these samples for service life estimates.

We are seeking a research chemist with physical organic chemistry skills to help contribute in understanding the complex aging reactions taking place within our energetic components and their polymeric binder systems.  You also have the opportunity to perform chemical synthesis research and process chemistry studies for government customers and to develop needed in-house compounds in support of other teams in the Research and Development organization.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of chemists, engineers (electrical, mechanical and chemical) and physicists all working together to advance the state of health management systems for products containing energetic materials.  Each of our team members skills are needed to devise new tests, methods and analyses to provide a deeper understanding of the processes responsible for observed material behavior.

You will work with personnel in our well-equipped analytical chemistry and mechanical properties testing laboratories as you define experiments with model compounds, subscale articles and returned fielded assets.  Our team is committed to defining accurate estimates of the continued functionality and risks associated with the complex and vital energetics-containing systems for NASA, DoD and commercial applications. Come be a part of our mission!

What youll get to do:
Collaborate with a skilled group of scientists and engineers to discover and quantify long term chemical changes in complex filled polymeric systems.
Work with R&D personnel and equipment to create unique new experiments and techniques focused on understanding chemical changes that occur during component deployment.

Work on chemical synthesis projects producing small quantities of specialized molecules.

Define, lead and present the results of chemical testing programs to internal and external customers.

Basic Qualifications:
BS in Chemistry with 5 years of relevant experience; MS in Chemistry with 3 years of relevant experience; Ph.D. in Chemistry (preferred).

U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with methods to determine chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics, and thermochemistry of complex organic systems.
Experience with organic synthesis and process chemistry.
Experience with analytical techniques: HPLC, NMR, LC/MS, PyGC/MS, IC/MS, FTIR, UV-Vis, GPC, XRF, SEM, AFM, and ICP.
Experience with molecular modeling software.
