Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
 
Set up, repair, adjust and calibrate working level instruments and laboratory standards.
 
WORKING PROCEDURE AND/OR RESPONSIBILITY ASSIGNED:
 
THE FOLLOWING ARE THE USUAL MAJOR JOB DUTIES BUT THIS JOB DESCRIPTION DOES NOT PRECLUDE THE PERFORMANCE OF OTHER DUTIES BY THE INCUMBENT, NOR THE QUESTION BEING RAISED ON THE PROPER RATE OF PAY FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.
 
In addition to performing the duties of the Jr. Calibration Technician, performs the following:
 
Set up, maintain and calibrate working level instruments and laboratory standards for any five (5) or more types of measurements within one of the following three groups.

A.  Mechanical & Physical work such as:
  • Pressure
  • Vacuum
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Force
  • Torque

B.  Gage Work such as:

  • Optics
  • Machine cutting tools
  • Threads
  • Hardness
  • Rings, plug, snap & fixtures (Go-No Go)
  • Angular & Radial measurement
  • Lineal measurement
  • Laser Interferometry
  • Surface flatness

C.  Electrical and electronic work such as:

  • Time and frequency
  • Distortion
  • Acceleration
  • Vibration
  • Displacement & velocity
  • DC Voltage, current and power
  • AC Voltage, current and power
  • Resistance, capacitance, inductance
  • Bridges
  • Oscilloscopes
  1. Select appropriate laboratory standards.
  2. Write calibration procedures for working level instruments and laboratory standards.
  3. Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair instruments and standards as required.
  4. Recommend improvements and change to calibration procedures and instrument recall cycles.
  5. Perform similar or lower classified work as required.
DIRECTION OF OTHERS:
 
Provide technical guidance and instruction to other technicians in lower classifications.
Occasional technical assistance from Laboratory Engineers and higher classified technicians.  General assistance from immediate supervisor.
 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school plus one (1) year technical or college training in engineering, fundamental physics and electrical theory or the recognized equivalent such as one year performing related instrument calibration or repair work that would be acquired in a military or commercial laboratory or in a commercial shop.
  • One (1) years experience as a Jr. Calibration Technician or equivalent such as related instrument calibration and repair work.
