Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal / Sr. Principal Software Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Huntsville, AL.

Position Overview:

The selected Principal / Sr. Principal Software Engineer will be responsible for developing and implementing software for the Ground-based Midcourse Defense Program (GMD) and join the GMD Fire Control Team, which is currently the only deployed strategic system that can defend the United States from long-range attack by threat ICBMs. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Design, develop, and implement testing methods, monitoring and test execution activities for program software.
  • Apply "systems thinking" to ensure developed products are scalable, maintainable, and meet end-user needs.
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts to support development of new innovative algorithms.
  • Support a cross-functional Agile team and communicate openly and effectively with teammates and customer representatives.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications:

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal or a Sr. Principal Software Engineer level.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Software Engineer are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience, a Master's Degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related experience or a PhD in a STEM discipline with 0 years of experience, or 9 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience developing software in object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, or Java.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10% to support business needs.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the DoD secret level; and a minimum of an interim secret clearance will be required to start.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 9 years of related experience, or a Master's Degree in a STEM discipline and 7 years of related experience, or 4 years of experience with a PhD, or 13 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience developing software in object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, or Java.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10% to support business needs.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the DoD secret level; and a minimum of an interim secret clearance will be required to start.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with international sensors and fire control systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with technical teams and customer personnel.
  • Proven communications skills with armed services & government customer.
  • Experience analyzing complex problems and developing solutions based on limited direction and definition.
  • Development utilizing a Linux based development environment.
  • Knowledge of various scripting languages and tools: Python, MATLAB, etc.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development practices.
  • Experience with Missile Defense Systems and Sense & Warn based systems.
  • Experience working on CMMI Level 3+ programs.
  • Security + Certification
  • A current active in-scope U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.

Salary Range: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
