Northrop Grumman is seeking a Software Engineer or Principal Software Engineer. This position (teleworking not available for this position) will be located at our Defense Systems Sector in Mesa, AZ

This career opportunity is a great fit for self-motivated, proactive individual who wants to contribute to the software role of Northrop Grumman's medium caliber Bushmaster gun controller product line.  Our engineers work in a high exposure, fast paced, and exciting environment that involves hands-on technical challenges, problem solving, and inter-department collaborations. Activities will range across full lifecycle development, integration, and test.  Will involve hands-on testing and troubleshooting, root cause/corrective actions, and stepping into other roles when needed. 

This role includes, but is not limited to, the following activities:

  • Software requirements development
  • Software architecture and detailed design
  • Software implementation
  • Software test
  • Software requirements verification and validation

Basic Qualifications for a Software Engineer:

  • BS in Computer Science with 2 years of software engineering experience OR a master’s degree plus 0 experience.
  • Experienced in embedded systems software development, integration, and testing
  • U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Software Engineer:

  • BS in Computer Science with 5 years of software engineering experience OR a master’s degree and 3 years of software engineering experience
  • Experienced in embedded systems software development, integration, and testing
  • U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing software for safety critical embedded systems
  • Experience integrating and debugging software on hardware
  • Fast learner and have a strong interest in hardware integration and test
  • Proficiency in C / C++
  • Microcontrollers (i.e. embedded programming at the register level)
  • Serial data buses – UART, SPI, I2C, CAN
  • Texas Instruments microcontrollers – MSP430 / TMS320 families
  • National Instrument LabVIEW / TestStand
  • Hands on electronics lab experience with DMMs, Power Supplies, Oscilloscopes
  • Experience with motor control
  • Closed loop control algorithms (i.e., PID)
  • State machine design patterns
  • Documentation – Requirements, Design, Test
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical engineering processes and other specialty engineering activities within the product development process.
  • SQL (we use SQL Server + .NET calls for the ATP project)
  • Matlab/Simulink
  • Microsoft Report Builder
  • Experience with Git/configuration management
  • Excellent organizational skills; strong interpersonal and analytic skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well in a small team-environment

Other Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain clearance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives as an Employee Possessor.


Salary Range: $71,100 USD - $106,700 USD
Salary Range 2: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
