Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) seeks to fill the position of Field Engineer / Principal Field Engineer to be a member of a highly diverse team consisting of NGC and sub-contractors with the Ground Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Development and Sustainment Contract in support of the Missile Defense Agency. The position located at Vandenburg Space Force Base and Beale Space force base in Lompoc, CA.

Position Overview:

Perform as a Ground Communications Node (GCN) and IFICS Data Termina (IDT) Technician for the GMD team for the Vandenburg Space Force Base and Beale Space force base. In this role, you are responsible for maintaining all IFICS Data Terminal (IDT) and GCN hardware, running and installing software, working with site maintenance scheduling, assisting with any anomalies, assisting with, and coordinating site upgrades, and support various GMD test events.

Job Responsibilities:

Assist managing internal as well as customer deliverables and will support process development and improvement. Travel to Beale will be as needed to support scheduled and unscheduled maintenance actions, support installations of hardware, software, and testing of the system. This position requires collaboration and teambuilding across multiple program IPTs, sub-contractors, and extensive customer interface as well as an On-call commitment as directed by the customer for emergency maintenance actions

Additional Responsibilities include:
 

  • Interface with the MDA customer on site
  • Maintain GMD assets in a manner of system availability over 99% to the customer
  • Provides, property control, facility, safety, security and daily production efforts
  • Report all anomalies/ incidents IAW standard maintenance policy and procedures
  • Support customer site visits and provide briefings on upgrades and obsolescence issues.
  • Attend site and program specific meetings, assist developing slides, charts, and white papers for decision making.
  • Support the Ground Systems (GS) products hardware / software integration, upgrades and repair requirements
  • Conduct software patching and anti-virus updates according to contract and SOW requirements
  • Travel will be required approximately 25% of time.

Basic Qualifications:

This position may be filled at either a Field Engineer or Principal Field Engineer level.

  • Field Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a technical Engineering or related discipline with 2 years of related experience. An additional 4 years of professional and related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Principal Field Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a technical Engineering or related discipline with 5 years of related experience. An additional 4 years of professional and related. Masters with 3 years experience.
  • 4 years of leadership as a technical lead or related team leadership role or 2 years’ experience as a manager in a related discipline
  • Active Secret Security Clearance and ability to obtain COMSEC and TS/SCI Clearance required.
  • Knowledge of local area networking (LAN) fundamentals with specific experience working with Ethernet routers, switches, and protocols in TCP-IP based communications system.
  • Strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and ability to work unsupervised at a remote site and interface with a diverse group.
  • Knowledge of UNIX, SNMP and HP OpenView applications.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of time as needed.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Personnel should be familiar with deploying and configuring Virtual Machines (VM)s via VMware’s vSphere Web Client:
  • Experience with /understanding of KIV-19 A/M/Taclane operations
  • 2 years IFICS Data Terminal (IDT) hardware/software experience or attended IDT specific schooling
  • Experience with operating in a Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 operating system
  • Experience with administering domains, groups, and users via AD Users and Computers (ADUC), Domain Name Service (DNS) and Group Policy Objects (GPO) is highly desirable
  • Operating in a Linux-based Command Line Interface (CLI) environment experience
  • Operating in a Cisco IOS-like CLI environment experience
  • Experience with Defense Satellite Communications systems
  • Process orientation and strong skills in using and following documented processes / checklists.
  • Willing to work flexible schedule to maintain operational capability.
  • Knowledge of military command, control, and communication systems.
  • Strong Communications Skills.
  • Knowledge of maintenance, logistics, and MMICS database desired.
  • Team Player

This position reports to Vandenberg AFB, CA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Beale AFB, CA, CA, USA.


Salary Range: $68,100 USD - $102,100 USD
Salary Range 2: $76,200 USD - $114,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
