SSSD has an opening for a Principal Electro-mechanical Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA.

The Principal Electro-mechanical Engineer will fulfill mechanical engineering activities for precision moving electro-mechanical products.  This includes leading engineering development efforts for complex mechanized and opto-mechanical units with cradle-to-grave hardware ownership from product conception to production.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the completion of specific programs and projects as a responsible engineer

  • Possess technical responsibility for product end-item performance at the configured item level

  • Represent the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues on specific projects

  • Develop technical specifications, conceptual designs, trade studies, detail designs, procedures, reports

  • Substantiate design with supporting analysis and buy-in from adjacent stakeholder disciplines

  • Collaborate with suppliers and external partners for technology and business development needs

  • Develop preliminary and critical design review content for peer and customer presentations

  • Create and review technical data packages including fabrication, source control, and assembly drawings

  • Provide engineering leadership during prototype and production hardware assembly & test

  • Provide as needed engineering support to material review boards and failure review boards

  • Serve as a technical mentor within the organization by sharing of lessons learned and best practices

  • Work with agility and minimal direction to complete concurrent program tasks on schedule

  • Employ strong interpersonal and communication skills while operating within an integrated product team

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline with 5 years of engineering experience; OR M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from with 3 years of engineering experience; OR PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline with 0 years of engineering experience

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level


Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline

  • Active U.S. Government security clearance at the Secret level with a background investigation date within 10 years

  • Experience with successful design, development, analysis, and verification of mechanized or opto-mechanical products in Aerospace and Defense

  • Demonstrated application of hardware systems engineering associated with the integration of products into complex Aircraft and/or Spacecraft subsystems

  • Experience with development of process improvements and standardized tools

  • Experience with ENOVIA/SMARTEAM Product Lifecycle Management

  • Have 3 or more years of experience using in Creo, Solidworks, NX, or CATIA V5 industry CAD software

  • Have 3 or more years of experience with development, qualification, or production of mechanized or opto-mechanical products for end-use in harsh environmental conditions

  • Have experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) applications per ASME Y.14-5 and tolerance stack analysis

  • Have experience with first order structural and thermal analysis and relevant analysis tools

Salary Range: $101,200 USD - $151,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
