Electronics and Payloads (E&P) is the hub of technical excellence in the design and integration of mission-based hardware and software at Northrop Grumman’s Autonomous Design Center of Excellence in San Diego, California.


As a member of the E&P team, you will work with engineers and technicians across all disciplines to support one of the following technical specialty areas: Mission and Project Engineering, RF Communications, IP Networks, Data Infrastructure, Advanced Sensors, Avionics Engineering, Ground Control Stations, Stores Management, or Electronic Warfare.

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principal Networks Communications Engineer.


Essential Functions:

  • Designs and plans network communications systems. Provides specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture.
  • Provides specific detailed information for hardware and software selection, implementation techniques and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements.
  • Conducts testing of network design. Maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc.
  • Understanding and wide application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Evaluates and reports on new communications technologies to enhance capabilities of the network.
  • Able to provide technical solutions to a wide range of complex difficult problems. Solutions should be imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives.
  • Contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects. Frequent inter-organizational and some outside customer contacts. Will represent the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.
  • Works under general supervision and contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 5 or more years of relative experience OR a Master degree in a STEM discipline and 3 or more years of relative experience OR a PhD in a STEM discipline and 1 or more years of relative experience
  • Active in-scope Secret clearance or higher; OR DoE equivalent
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
  • Experience providing Network support in a lab and field environment.
  • Expertise with network device configuration and troubleshooting (ideally, Cisco IOS/IOS-XE) and knowledge of configuring devices such as Type 1 Encryptors, Routers, switches in a LAN/WAN.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of features like GRE, IPSEC, DMVPN, IP quality-of-service, VLANs, and multicast.
  • Working knowledge on Virtualization (e.g. VMware)
  • Working knowledge on Tactical wireless communications technologies (e.g. LOS, BLOS)
  • Cisco ACI Fabric
  • Ansible
  • Atlassian Suite working knowledge (BitBucket, Git, Jira)
  • Security+ certificate


Salary Range: $101,200 USD - $151,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
