There is currently an opening for Engineer Material Process (level 2) or Principal Engineer Material Process (level 3) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position falls under one of Northrop Grumman's Small Business Units, Sonoma Photonics, Inc. and will be located in Santa Rosa, CA.

Essential Functions:  Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications. Perform optical coating design, tolerancing, analysis and process engineering of optics for projects related to optical technologies. Apply, as well as design and develop new techniques and coatings to meet product needs. Individually contribute to product development or program completion.  The successful candidate can expect to receive technical guidance from more senior engineers, program managers, and supervisory review on proposed plans. 

Work will be conducted in both an office and lab/mfg environment with various temperatures and possible exposure to chemicals.

This position can be filled an either an Engineer Material Process (level 2) or Principal Engineer Material Process (level 3)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Engineer Material Process - Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or related and 3 years of related experience or Master's Degree and 1 year of experience

  • Principal Engineer Material Process - Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or related and 6 years of related experience or Master's Degree and 4 years of experience

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

  • Experience with statistical methods and analysis

  • Ability to clearly present and communicate ideas, concepts, and plans

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel

  • Excellent organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with optical thin films; thin film modeling software (TFCalc, Optilayer, etc.) preferred

  • Strong background in electromagnetics preferred

  • Active DoD Secret clearance

  • Familiarity with thin film optical materials and thin film characterization techniques preferred


Salary Range: $74,900 USD - $112,300 USD
Salary Range 2: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
