Adaptive Optics Associates – Xinetics (AOA Xinetics), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division Business Venture, has an exciting opportunity for a Software Engineering Manager to support our Special Programs business activities in East Hartford, CT.

AOA Xinetics (AOX) designs and manufactures mission critical optical and photonic solutions. We serve markets worldwide including defense (ISR, directed energy, laser communications), industrial (freight logistics, semiconductor) and scientific (astronomy). Since its inception, AOX has been ‘working light’ for the betterment of our customers, the protection of our nation and the advancement of humankind.

Overview

Reporting to the AOX Engineering Director, the Software Engineering Manager will work with other engineering managers and program managers across the organization to develop critical technical capabilities that drive our businesses. The successful candidate will work closely with their direct reports and business area leaders to develop engineering talent, tools, and processes. They will collaborate with peer departments in manufacturing, quality, and program management. The Software Engineering Manager will be responsible for delivering value primarily through expertise in software engineering in a team oriented and customer focused environment.  We are looking for a successful leader with exceptional people skills, one who is valued by employees and customers alike. Our ideal candidate has developed teams and mentored successful technical contributors to perform at high levels. They will possess strong written, verbal, and communication skills; and be collaborative with peers/peer organizations. Specifically, the details of the position are as follows:

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Performs as a working manager (>50% direct labor) as a technical lead or individual contributor for related discipline

  • Responsible for the technical performance of their respective discipline's group

  • Establish, maintain, encourage, and enforce common design practices, standards, and policies in their respective discipline

  • Provide general management, motivation, guidance, and support to assigned staff

  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives (People, Process, Tools, and Program Execution)

  • Ensure software team is compliant with applicable NG and AOX policies and procedures

  • Collaborate with other engineering managers on interdisciplinary and cross discipline engineering initiatives, efforts, and task execution

  • Deploy team to meet resource demand requirements of programs, R&D, and test efforts in the organization.

  • Identify and expand capability skill sets to meet program needs through employee development or use of resources in other areas of Northrop Grumman.

  • Travel as needed to support programs, training, or other needs (Generally< 10%)

  • Support IRAD planning and execution

  • Support program management, proposal development, and contracts with ETC’s, schedule status, replans, ECP’s, etc.

  • Provide cost/technical/schedule inputs to proposals and other customer inquiries. 

  • Assign staff to support new business capture activities as required. 

  • In collaboration with the other engineering functions establish proposal technical baseline

  • Manage team members at AOX’s East Hartford CT and Devens MA locations

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. in Software, Computer Science, or related engineering degree, 9+ years’ experience in software development, or 7+ years with a master’s degree

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a supervisory/management role, including technical leadership and performance/career development

  • Knowledge/experience with software and test applications development for hardware interfaces, embedded software applications, and distributed systems, for electro-mechanical, optical solutions and/or applications.

  • Experience in software development with at least 2 of the following – C#, Python, Matlab, C/C++, SQL Server, or LabVIEW

  • Experience with version control and task management tools such as SVN, JIRA, MS-Project, etc.

  • Have a significant history of technical achievements along with demonstrated successes in engineering supervisory and project management roles

  • Possess leadership skills to develop, organize and execute engineering activities, including building teams, and assessing technical performance

  • Experience preparing and executing detailed program reviews; developing and managing engineering processes and standards; coordinating engineering services, infrastructure, and tools and planning and development of engineering budgets and staffing

  • Maintains a positive and professional working environment

  • Experience recruiting and developing engineering talent for software, embedded systems, and test application developers.

  • Possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, division managers, and peers in the business areas

  • Excellent communication skills

  • US Citizenship is a bona fide requirement as applicants selected are subject to a government security investigation

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Computer Science or Business Management

  • Active Top Secret clearance

  • Experience in DoD or Aerospace product development/manufacturing

  • EVMS or PMP experience


Salary Range: $143,500 USD - $215,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
