Payload and Ground Systems Division of the Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking Embedded Software Engineer to be responsible for full life-cycle product development of new software subsystems and defense electronics as well as customization of current systems to support customer needs.

As an Embedded and Network Software Engineer, you will be involved in requirements analysis and system architecture, coding, design and verification using state of the art tools and techniques. These products and systems power the next generation of products. Our products are integrated with our customers’ machines and systems and many of the applications are highly customized and unique.

We are interested in highly motivated candidates with embedded software design experience with focus on software interactions with real time systems, network programming, and secure software solutions.

Required Qualifications:

  • For Principal Software Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 5 years of relevant professional work experience OR Master's degree and minimum of 3 years of relevant experience OR PHD degree and 0 years experience
  • For Senior Principal Software Engineer, Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 9 years of relevant professional work experience OR Master's degree and minimum of 7 years of relevant experience OR PHD degree with minimum of 4 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or comparable STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) degree
  • Experience with embedded software development in C/C++
  • Solid knowledge of object-oriented concepts
  • Working knowledge of network programming in C/C++
  • Experience with scripting languages such as: Python, JavaScript, Perl, Unix/DOS shell scripts
  • Willing and able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active or Current Top Secret clearance with SCI
  • Extensive experience with network programming in C/C++
  • Knowledge in operating system concepts for real-time embedded systems
  • Experience developing distributed remote command-and-control software systems
  • Experience with HTTP/HTTPS, REST APIs and JSON
  • Experience with the implementation of TLS and SSL enabled communications
  • Experience with messaging technologies and protocols (e.g., RabbitMQ, AMQP, ZeroMQ, MQTT, Kafka, etc)
  • Experience with UI/GUI design and implementation
  • Experience with messaging patterns (Queuing vs Pub/Sub, Router/Dealer, etc)
  • Understanding of the C++ development life cycle & tooling on RHEL Linux
  • Experience with software design and implementation under SELinux and Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF)
  • Familiarity with NIST and DoD standard bodies (NIST 800-53, NIST SP 800-171, DoD 8140.01, etc)
  • Experience with the implementation of Anti-Tamper software
  • Basic cryptographic knowledge (symmetric/asymmetric encryption mechanisms)
  • Experience leading and defining software development and architecting activities
  • Experience implementing and defining digital signal processing algorithms
  • Experience with hands-on hardware debugging and bring-up

Additional $10k sign-on bonus for selected candidates who possess an ACTIVE TS/SCI clearance, and an additional $5k sign-on bonuses to selected candidates who possess an active Polygraph.


Salary Range: $96,900 USD - $145,300 USD
Salary Range 2: $120,000 USD - $180,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
