Northrop Grumman is searching for Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Engineers on multiple major development programs with digital representation-driven system/software development, integration, and test activities. These positions include design, test, and implementation of Mark XIIB IFF and military ATC applications, including SIF, Mode 5, Mode S and ADS-B on digital sensor solutions. These programs are breaking ground in digital transformation in the NGMS sector and Baltimore campus, leveraging a model-/simulation-based approach including DevSecOps principles aligning with emerging DoD acquisition strategies.

The skills needed and work descriptions include a wide range of the following unique and separate skill sets:

  • Low-level design/integration (FPGA/board level) for IFF systems that are embedded into the primary system: "clean sheet" designs that incorporate IFF solutions into new sensor development.

    • Understanding of timeline management and scheduling (coordinating resources with other sensor(s) while simultaneously complying with the DoD AIMS and Customer requirements)

    • Receiver impulse response modeling with simulated A/D and IQ for SP development

    • I&T experience typical of an embedded system: use of Spectrum, Modulation and Bus analyzers and FPGA chip scope firmware. 

    • Test automation experience: instrumentation of the operational software to define “hooks” and verification capabilities to provide visibility into operations or to automate the extensive test data collections required for verification and AIMS certification activities.

  • Customizing the basic capabilities of a COTS box interrogator to meet customer SSR requirements, DoD AIMS requirements and Mission Use Cases to support the mission.

    • Perform system trades on COTS box interrogators

    • Work with subcontractors to provide an interoperable IFF solution (box level) and integrate with the primary sensor

    • Performing System “V” engineering including use cases, requirements, and V&V development

    • Knowledge of the ASTERIX spec and experience with MATLAB and Ethernet recording tools such as WireShark and ERDDS are a plus

  • Knowledge of DoD AIMS Requirements and experience with the DoD AIMS Certification Process across both low-level design and COTS box integration

    • IFF Test Sets and IFF cryptographic equipment are a plus

Qualified candidates will have opportunities to accelerate the delivery of IFF capability to our customers through the development and use of advanced models and simulations of RF sensors and the interactions with the environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Microelectronics, Material Science, Chemistry, Physics or closely related technical major with 9 years of relevant experience (7 years with an MS; 4 years with PhD)
  • Active Security clearance required to start
  • Matlab experience
  • Understanding the AIMS certification process and documentation
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering
  • Experience working through the Systems Engineering process

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Security Clearance with Special Access
  • Extensive Matlab experience
  • Experience with AIMS certification process and documentation
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering including tools to support (Cameo, Rhapsody, etc.)
  • Experience with early development of a clean sheet Radar design

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

This position reports to Baltimore, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Linthicum, MD, MD, USA.


Salary Range: $123,800 USD - $185,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
