The Payload and Ground Systems Division (PGSD) within Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a leader to manage a team of highly qualified, diverse individuals in the Remote Sensing Programs (RSP) Hardware Organization within PGSD in Baltimore, MD. The Hardware Organization is a rapidly growing organization with over 190 members and 3 departments including Sub-System Leadership (SSL), Electrical Design & Digital Technology (EDDT), and Mechanical Technology (MET).

The position is a Hardware Department Manager of the Sub-System Leadership (SSL) Department focused mainly on Antenna Design, Analysis, Integration, and Test. The position is approximately 50% functional organization management with 3 direct managers, 4 direct senior technical leads/architects, and 50 team members and 50% direct contract work (program related work). The role will focus on three primary areas of responsibility: department strategy, team leadership, and technical performance. 

Department Strategy Responsibilities include:

  • Understanding internal and external customer needs and roadmaps

  • Building development plans for Antenna products in concert with senior technical staff

  • Shaping program execution plans to be complementary with product line architecture initiatives

Team Leadership Responsibilities include:

  • Functional oversight of a section of engineers working multiple programs, IRAD initiatives, and new business capture opportunities

  • Directly leading front-line managers and senior antenna architects and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)

  • Staffing and workload forecasting

  • Recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new and experienced employees

  • Training new managers

  • Employee inclusion, engagement, and mentoring

  • Performance management and career development

  • Identification of skills required to execute on programs and needed employee training.

  • Managing an indirect budget for training, hiring costs, process improvement, staff meetings, and career development activities.

Technical Performance Responsibilities Include:

  • Support and adherence to engineering processes

  • Oversight of technical quality for various development, integration, or production programs

  • Support for new business development and proposals.

  • Development and advancement of the technology, including supporting organization initiatives around streamlining the design and test process by determining more efficient methodologies.

The successful candidate will clearly demonstrate strong leadership skills to achieve sustainable top performance. They will have a track record as an effective communicator and problem solver who is able to develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. This candidate will demonstrate a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the capability to innovate while challenging traditional ways of doing business.

The candidate will work closely with directors and managers of other engineering disciplines, program directors and program managers. The ideal candidate will also be able to champion change within the organization, to achieve competitive advantage for the business. 10% travel may be required.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline

  • Minimum of 9 years of professional relevant experience (7 years with MS; 4 years with Ph.D.)

  • Must be experienced in all aspects of the hardware engineering process, from requirements analysis through verification testing with the ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • 5 years of project management/Integrated Product Team Leadership (IPTL)/functional management

  • 3 years of technical leadership

  • High proficiency in technical problem solving, to include decomposition, root cause analysis, solution development, implementation, and monitoring

  • Current, active Top Secret Security clearance with the ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance level. US Citizenship is a prerequisite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

  • Experience with Antenna Design, Analysis, and/or Integration & Test

  • Experience with earned value management


Salary Range: $168,100 USD - $252,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
