AOA Xinetics (AOX), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division Business Venture, is a leading supplier of complex electro-optic and photonic systems and subsystems that control and manipulate light waves for a variety of applications. Markets for these technologies include civilian astronomy and defense ISR & Directed Energy programs. We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Manager to support the Silicon Carbide Structures Value Stream in Devens. MA


The Manufacturing Engineering Manager 1 – Silicon Carbide Structures Value Stream will be responsible for leading the execution and support of current projects and programs in the areas of adaptive and passive silicon carbide structures. The incumbent will be responsible for the day to day management of activities of manufacturing engineers involved with the manufacturing of silicon carbide structures via freeze casting and additive manufacturing processes for ground and space based products.

Will be responsible for daily production, process development and continuous improvement. they will be the technical interface between the product engineering staff, optical integration and silicon carbide value stream manufacturing engineers, and production.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • As a leader of the MA Manufacturing Engineering Organization, the incumbent would work collaboratively with peers and peer organizations in the development and production of ground and space based silicon carbide structures.

  • Provide leadership, materials, and process support to all aspects of adaptive and passive optics, as well as . This role would support project/program work from new product introduction to ramp up of production in support of the targeted business growth objectives.

  • Responsible for the review, feedback, and drive to release, of work instructions, material and manufacturing flows.

  • Leads the development of manufacturing engineering processes, monitors process metrics and associated manufacturing work cell functionality. Manufacturing processes shall enable the manufacturing of current and future AOX products that meet technical specifications, high quality standards, and relevant agency compliance requirements.

  • Identify and propose manufacturing improvements projects in collaboration with team members including the following: manufacturing process improvement, yield management, production rate improvement and work cell enhancements and procurement. Use fundamental physical and materials science principles to drive production and design changes that result in superior products.

  • Respond to production process problems and driving the implementation of solutions. Collaborate with the Quality Organization to reduce defects and maintain high production yield rates.

  • Customer-facing responsibilities as it relates to Manufacturing Engineering; (i) Support briefings and technical meetings with external customers; and (ii) periodically address customer manufacturing engineering issues and concerns as the company’s POC. This includes the creation of technical presentations that may or may not be presented by the individual.

  • Identify systems and process goals (KPI’s) to ensure that work cells and equipment meet operational performance

  • Collaborates with Product Engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best use work cell capabilities and manufacturing processes to assure “design for manufacturing” products.

  • Accountable to meet or exceed the Manufacturing Engineering and support the Operational safety, quality, delivery, employee, and cost (SQDEC) expectations of external and internal customers across all AOX programs supported by the Silicon Carbide Structures Value Stream

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline

  • Background ceramic or silicon carbide manufacturing processes

  • Clear, concise oral and written communication skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office applications

  • Strong critical thinking and logical reasoning skills and the ability to apply them to solve issues and predict potential technical risks.

  • Proven root-cause and Ishikawa analysis skill sets.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience leading or managing engineers

  • Experience working in a commercial aerospace production environment

  • Experience in leadership of teams in resolving complex technical issues

  • Lean Sigma Green Belt or equivalent

Salary Range: $118,600 USD - $178,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
