The Manager, Crew Systems Engineering reports to the Sr Manager, Human Spaceflight Integration & Operations (HSI&O) within the Integrated Operations Directorate, Tactical Space Division of Northrop Grumman Space Systems.  The HSI&O department is responsible for development, testing and delivery of all human spaceflight operational products, human systems integration (HSI), cargo engineering & operations and crew systems hardware for HEO Programs.  Those could include space vehicle handbooks, operational procedures, training material and any other contractually required operational products.  Additionally, Crew Systems (CS) is responsible for Flight Crew related hardware and accommodations for Human Spaceflight.  This CS manager will serve as a subject matter expert for the CS teams across all of the Human Exploration Operations (HEO) Programs.  The CS group consists of crew accommodations (CA), computer human interface (CHI), utilization/payloads (Util), cargo engineering/operations, human factors engineering (HFE) & human system integration (HSI). The HSI&O team has grown significantly into a geographically disperse unit that requires functional management presence support multiple programs across various locations. The candidate will be an Operator or Technical leader on programs in the Civil & Commercial Satellites business area; split between direct (programs) and indirect (functional) is approximately 80% / 20% respectively.

The Manager, Crew Systems:

  • Has functional responsibility for current and new staff, performance evaluations, and salary reviews. 
  • Has responsibility for managing within overhead budget constraints, and for supporting annual capital planning cycles.
  • Ensures personnel are properly trained to perform their assigned duties
  • Ensures the HSI&O teams execute agreed upon scope within cost & schedule constraints
  • Ensures HSI&O teams adhere to existing ISO-approved processes associated with Ops Product development, spacecraft and crew system operations.
  • Ensures proper processes are documented, trained, and followed.
  • Interfaces with external customers to maximize customer satisfaction.
  • Supports crew systems planning and hardware delivered systems.
  • Provides support to reviews & monthly reporting, action item track, task & resource management
  • Supports and enforces all Quality Assurance processes, procedures, and participates in periodic internal and/or external audits
  • Interfaces with Engineering and Site Leadership to ensure flow up and flow down of information
  • Maintains close coordination with the HSI&O Sr Manager and the rest of the Integrated Operations management team to ensure standardization and efficiencies in process and execution
  • Has functional management responsibility for the department’s performance and salary management
  • Has functional responsibility for opening and filling requisitions as required to meet program staffing requirements
  • Has functional responsibility to ensure Cost Account Managers within the department are properly managing their cost, schedule, and technical responsibilities
  • Will support pre-launch and on-orbit activities, which could occur at the launch site and/or one of Tactical Space Division’s Mission Operations Centers.

This position may be hired at a Manager 3 level depending on experience and qualifications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM field
  • 10 years of experience with human spaceflight operations and/or crew systems
  • U.S. citizen
  • Proficiency delivering technical solutions/contributions to the completion of project milestones independently while supervising others, within schedule and budget and with presenting findings to customers and contractors at major milestone meetings
  • Significant experience with Systems Engineering processes, engineering lifecycle, technical readiness levels, and technical evaluation with objective and subjective supportive data
  • Experience with requirements management
  • Experience interfacing with external customers on a technical and programmatic level
  • Leadership/Management experience and/or training personnel
  • Must be able to travel (10%)
  • Must be able to work occasional nights/weekends/holidays in support of flight operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with earned value management and variance reporting
  • Experience as a Cost Account Manager, program manager, functional manager, or as the lead of a mission operations/ground systems lead
  • Experience developing and/or mentoring staff
  • Experience with the interpretation and application of complex systems integration, systems safety, crew survivability, and habitability requirements to system design
  • Experience with hardware development and qualification and acceptance testing.
  • Familiarity with Human Factors principles (NASA-STD-3001 or MIL-STD 1472)
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) Preferably PTC CREO
  • Experience with Confluence/Jira
  • Experience with Northrop Grumman Space Systems bus products

This position reports to Houston, TX, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Dulles, VA, VA, USA.


Salary Range: $143,500 USD - $215,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
