The Payload and Ground Systems organization within the Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. Northrop Grumman Space Systems (NGSP) seeks to fill and experienced Orbit Analyst (Principal/Sr Principal Systems Modeling Simulation Engineer) in the Payload and Ground Systems Division Engineering organization supporting Integrated National Systems (INS) Business Unit (BU). This position may be located in Fairfax, VA or Linthicum, MD.

A successful candidate will demonstrate a technical understanding of space systems, orbital mechanics, and the ability to create models to analyze mission capabilities. Candidate is expected to work both independently and within a team, demonstrating the ability to multi-task and communicated effectively with varying levels of program, customer and functional organization leadership.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Modeling satellite orbits and sensor fields of view/fields of regard to determine site access start/stop times and revisit frequency

  • Track, monitor, analyze and verify spacecraft orbit regimes

  • Support contact planning validation

  • Assist in requirements definition, analysis and engineering, system architecting, system analysis and design, interface and data architectures, validation and verification, systems integration, and system & operational performance analysis

  • Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software or engineering specifications

  • Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints

  • Design and develop simulation systems and modeling of simulation objects

The requisition may be filled at either the Principal or Senior Principal grade based on the qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Principal: Bachelor's degree in STEM with 5+years of relevant experience, OR Master's degree with 3+ years, or PhD with 0+ years; 9+ years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree requirement.

  • Sr. Principal: Bachelor's degree in STEM with 9+years of relevant experience, OR Master's degree with 7+ years, or PhD with 4+ years; 13+ years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree requirement.

  • Orbital Analysis experience

  • Experience developing software models

  • Basic understanding of satellite systems and architectures

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, team building and problem-solving skills

  • Experience in IC/DoD satellite programs

  • 3+ years experience with STK

  • 3+ years experience with MATLAB

  • Active TS/SCI or TS with SCI eligibility and willingness to sit for a polygraph

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25%)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI with polygraph

  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering

  • Experience working with geographically distributed teams

This position reports to Fairfax, VA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Linthicum, MD, MD, USA.


Salary Range: $96,900 USD - $152,200 USD
Salary Range 2: $120,000 USD - $188,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
