Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Sector Director (D2), Engineering.  The position is in the Quality and Operational Excellence organization and will report to the VP, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing. The Primary location for this position is McLean, VA but may be located at one of our major NGDS site, (e.g., Rocket Center, WV, Huntsville, AL, Plymouth, MN, Northridge, CA or Elkton, MD) Relocation assistance may be available. Travel will be required.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience leading and providing key contributions to Engineering disciplines and practices and have a track record of strong collaboration and leading by influence. He/She will have successfully demonstrated Engineering development and driven execution of plans, collaboration across Enterprise with peers, and overseen Engineering talent development programs in partnership with Human Resources Organization. 

The candidate must also have a strong grasp of campaign execution, networking strategy, and possess the skills, drive, and judgement to interface with senior leaders across the sector, company, and customer community.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Leading the Sector strategy for Engineering
  • Assessing and recommending improvements in training, processes, and tools to ensure engineering rigor through all phases of a program lifecycle
  • Developing engineering long term strategic plans with the Divisions
  • Providing engineering expertise to support the Divisions, with an emphasis on creating a strong foundation for program performance including establishing a technical baseline, configuration control, and change management processes
  • Leading engineering component of significant milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) and independent program reviews for both hardware and software programs
  • Creating teams to resolve issues
  • Representing Defense Systems on Enterprise Engineering bodies
  • Coordinate Systems and Engineering Tools Portfolio required for Product Development /Service Delivery and program execution.
  • Involved in attracting and capturing new business by participating in proposals, NARs and analyses of alternatives/trade studies requiring the area of engineering expertise.
  • Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or 8 years of relevant experience with Masters of degree in a technical field; 4 years of relevant experience with a PHD in a technical field.
  • Engineering functional leadership experience
  • Familiar with Agile for SW and HW
  • Experience applying Engineering practices in all lifecycle phases
  • Experience with open architecture systems engineering
  • Experience evaluating introduction of new processes or tools into established environments
  • Change leadership experience, especially in mentoring and development
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance up to Top Secret
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • DOD Secret clearance needed to start
  • Special Access Program clearable within a reasonable period based on business needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiar with state-of-the-art model-based engineering tools and linkages to all program phases and functions
  • Master’s degree in a related field, advanced technical degree in a STEM field.
  • Experience designing, modeling, analyzing, and/or developing advanced aerospace systems, intended to operate in the Highly Contested Environment (HCE)
  • Experience designing and implementing technical development strategies and technical talent development programs to drive business results
  • TS/SCI; Must be able to attain and maintain Special Program Access (PAR)  
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 30% of the time as required by business needs.  

This position reports to McLean, VA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 6 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $186,700 USD - $324,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
