We are seeking an Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) Engineer within the Tactical Space Division at Northrop Grumman Space Systems. This position offers the opportunity to work on exciting space flight programs designed to further Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) in Low Earth Orbit and beyond to the Moon and Mars.

This position may be performed in Dulles, VA, Gilbert, AZ, or Houston, Texas. We may also offer candidates the ability to telecommute.

The ECLSS Engineer is responsible for working on a multi-disciplined team of engineers to develop, design, integrate, analyze and oversee the production, test and operation of ECLSS Air Revitalization, Pressure Control Systems, Ventilation, and/or Water and Waste Water Controls solutions for manned spacecraft systems.

The ECLSS Engineer is responsible for key ECLS System deliverables as part of an Integrated Team for various programs, following the direction and results of a multi-disciplined engineering development of the space system architecture & elements of for flight program deliverables or new business concepts and proposals.

The ECLSS Engineer position is expected to be self-directed using previous experience to help lead Spacecraft and/or Mission design and analysis efforts, Mission Operations and Ground Segment development, or Specialty Systems Engineering Analysis. Candidates must be able to recognize and mitigate instrument, spacecraft, ground segment, and mission technical issues while ensuring their assigned program is operating within budget and on schedule.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to all or select programs for the ECLSS Functional team

  • Lead and critique space vehicle and/or ground segment design and analysis efforts

  • Conceive and develop solutions to complex analytical, design, and test problems 

  • Technical management of subcontracted program elements

  • Support contractual space segment technical reviews

  • Write status and technical performance reviews and reports

Basic Requirements for Staff ECLSS Engineer 5:

  • BS in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math discipline with a minimum of 14 years of industry experience; MS Degree with 12 years of industry experience; or a PhD with 9 years of experience.

  • Experience with Air Revitalization, Water and/or Waste processing systems, or Pressurized Control System hardware as can be applied to spaceflight applications.

  • Ability to develop verification and validation plans.

  • Ability to develop and manage hardware interfaces to integrate within a spacecraft design.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of ECLSS designs within a space environment.

  • Ability to support identification and mitigation of program level risks relating to ECLSS design

  • US Citizenship is required for this position

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interfacing with any of the following fields: Command and Data Handling design and development / Electrical design at a card, component, cabling or interfaces/Software design and development.

  • Experience in development and maintenance of interface control documents.

  • Experience in spaceflight hardware testing and evaluation.

This position reports to Dulles, VA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 5 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $122,500 USD - $212,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
