Northrop Grumman’s Chief Information Office organization is seeking a UX Data Visualization Designer. The UX Data Visualization Designer will become a part of Northrop Grumman's User Experience organization and will be responsibility for interaction design activities and deliverables including common graphics, such as charts, plots, infographics, and even animations. These visual displays of information will communicate complex data relationships and data-driven insights in a way that is easy to understand.

As the UX Data Visualization Designer you will be working with our Chief Data Office (CDO) to develop and execute an implementation plan to build modern data visualizations and strategies to translate complex data into an easily comprehensible visual form to helps managers, executives and other decision-makers understand and internalize information that they can use to advance their organizations. The candidate will partner with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and other Data Professionals to develop data visualizations.

  • Translate high-level objectives and design principles into polished visual design

  • Design user experiences that are intuitive and elegant and in-line with current design trends and concepts

  • Be an advocate for interaction design best practices with a focus on consistency and usability

  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders.

  • Make data-informed product design decisions and ideations to create the best user experience

  • Create project timelines and prioritize current projects

Basic Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

Basic Qualifications for Principal Level

  • BS/BA in related field and at least 5 years of relevant experience; 3 years with a Master's degree (in lieu of education, 4 years of additional exempt related experience

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Level

  • BS/BA in related field and at least 9 years of relevant experience; 7 years with a Master's degree (in lieu of education, 4 years of additional exempt related experience

  • Demonstrated ability in designing graphic user interfaces elements and UI mockups/prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and look

  • Strong understanding of the end-to-end UX/UI lifecycle, design principles and process

  • Must be organized and able to manage multiple competing priorities 

  • Experience working with desktop, mobile web and native apps

  • Design visualizations that reduce cognitive load to effectively leverage short-term memory.

  • Design visualizations that align with pre-attentive attributes to effectively leverage sensory memory.

  • Design visualizations to inform viewers without misleading.

  • Effectively use chart types to answer specific questions.

  • Design dashboards and stories using visual best practices.

  • Must be able to convert complex data into modern data visualization

  • Must be knowledge of using Data Analytics tools

  • Must have experience using web analytics data to inform design decisions

  • Clear understanding of digital accessibility (color contrast, font size, color usage, mobility, etc.) to achieve WCAG A and AA levels.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/BA or Master’s degree in Arts/Design, Information Communication Technology, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Excellent eye and visual taste, including a passion for simplicity and a clean, crisp aesthetic

  • Experience with large-scale projects

  • Knowledge and understanding of human-centered thinking/design 

  • Experience using methodologies such as Agile, Lean UX, and Lean Startup.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to present projects and status reports to senior management.

  • Current with the latest UX and UI trends, techniques, and technologies 

  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript 

  • Experience in interaction design utilizing Axure RP Pro

  • Have experience in agile methodologies 

  • Excellent verbal and visual communicator that is flexible and patient

  • Experience with BI / visualization tools like Tableau, PowerBI, etc.

  • Experience / Knowledge with business intelligence and data science terms.


Salary Range: $95,100 USD - $142,700 USD
Salary Range 2: $117,900 USD - $176,900 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
