We are seeking a talented Principal/Sr. Principal Electrical Engineer to join our team in Rocket Center, WV just outside of Cumberland, MD. Rocket Center, WV is located along the North Branch Potomac River in Mineral County, West Virginia and is home to the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL), a government installation operated by Northrop Grumman. The ABL site is home to technical and highly skilled talent who design, develop, and manufacture tactical rocket motors, medium caliber ammunition, composite components and end items, and fuze and electronics equipment. For decades, the talented team at ABL have supported national security efforts by developing and building defense systems and missile products for DoD customers and U.S. allies.

This position requires experience in applying electrical engineering practices to all phases of military programs for rocket motor ignition safety devices, including:

  • Technical leadership for Electrical Engineers on programs comprised of diverse and competing requirements.

  • Partnering with an Integrated Product Team across engineering disciplines to ensure teams are progressing toward an optimal interdisciplinary solution.

  • Leading a team of Electrical Engineers through development ensuring processes and procedures are followed, technical tradeoffs are considered, design requirements identified and understood, milestone adherence and change management.

  • Engineering interface to program management to ensure alignment to program goals.

  • Provides daily updates up to program management team and is primary communicator of program strategy to design engineering team.

  • Present program technical status to internal management and customers.

  • Lead technical white papers, engineering proposals, trade analyses and internal research and development efforts.

  • Performs research, design, and development in such areas as power conditioning electronics, analog circuit design, digital circuit design, FPGA design, and other general electrical engineering design functions.

  • Applies research to the planning, design, development and testing of electrical circuits for use in military applications.

  • Generate design schematics preferably with experience using CAD tools such as Mentor Graphics.

  • Develops specifications for and performs selection of components for use in electrical circuits for military applications.

  • Compiles and analyzes test data to determine effect of design on electrical circuits for military applications.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications for Principal Level:

  • BS in STEM, preferably in Electrical Engineering

  • At least 5 years of related electrical engineering experience, or at least 3 years of related electrical engineering experience with a Masters in Engineering, or PhD & 4 years.

  • Must be a US citizen and have the ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.

  • Possess strong analytical skills to enable risk analyses and management throughout program.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a development team to understand system level interdependencies that impact requirements and design constraints.

  • Preferably an understanding of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) disciplines; including design for assembly / design for manufacturing (DFA/DFM).

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a development team to understand system level interdependencies that impact requirements and design constraints.

  • Preferably an understanding of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) disciplines; including design for assembly / design for manufacturing (DFA/DFM).

This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location.  Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor.


Salary Range: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $108,600 USD - $163,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
