Northrop Grumman SSSD has an opening for a Senior Principal Engineer Environmental, to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Manhattan Beach/Redondo Beach, CA.

The Senior Principal Engineer Environmental serves as the internal hazardous waste and hazardous materials subject matter expert performing complex technical work in environmental compliance, reporting, and permitting. This position is responsible for managing compliant proper storage and disposition of all hazardous, universal, and electronic waste at the site. The role requires reviewing processes and equipment, assisting with pollution prevention activities, analyzing technical and regulatory issues, and communicating those analyses to internal customers and various levels of leadership. Additionally, it will involve maintaining and updating Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans, Hazardous Waste Contingency Plans, Hazardous Materials Management plans and chemical inventory. The position involves effective communication, decision-making, attention to detail, and time management.

Responsibilities and Duties include:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor environmental management systems, processes, and programs

  • Manage a broad spectrum of waste streams including hazardous, extremely hazardous, universal, lab packs, and e-waste

  • Lead waste management, storage, and disposition of all hazardous, universal, and electronic waste

  • Monitor pollution prevention activities, compliance, and auditing efforts.

  • Provide design requirement for construction projects, plant processes and permit changes.

  • Perform calculations and analysis needed for regulatory reporting including biennial, taxes, drum log tracking, and profile development/preparation

  • Respond to spills/incidents

  • Review and analyze environmental documentation issued by the federal EPA, State, and local regulatory agencies.

  • Assesses the impact of emerging environmental issues, legislation, and regulations on company operations and develops compliance strategies and requirements.

  • Interacts with federal, State, and local regulators to resolve compliance issues; establishes permit requirements and assists in EPA, State, and local regulatory audits.

  • Represents company in government and industry rule-making activities.

  • Interpersonal skills are a must since this job function will require working with a diverse group of internal and external organizations.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science degree and 9+ years of related experience (refer to job description); Or 7+ years of related experience with a Masters Degree; Or 4 years of experience with a PhD.

  • 4+ years working at a large quantity generator facility

  • Computer related skills for database management, internet/intranet use, and Microsoft Office

  • Highly motivated self-starter, with ability to work and solve problems independently

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team fashion, handle several projects at once, prioritize work, and work efficiently

  • Familiarity with the state of California environmental regulations and their application

  • Ability to read and interpret federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organization skills

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and regulators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Aerospace environmental compliance experience

  • 10+ years working at a large quantity generator facility

  • Experience with contractor management

  • Experience with CERS reporting system

  • Experience with California Tiered Permitting for hazardous waste treatment

  • Experience with chemical inventory management systems

  • Experience with California CUPAs – Certified Unified Program Agencies (inspections, reporting, communications)

  • Experience coordinating and communicating with Fire Departments

  • Solid knowledge of chemistry and inventory management

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or equivalent professional certification

  • HAZWOPER trained a technician level or higher.

  • Root cause and corrective action skills

Salary Range: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
