Performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to, fastening, assembly, assisting engineers in the development of engineering designs, tests, fabrications, modifications, assemblies and components. Drafts detailed drawings for fabrication. Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies. Sets up and tests complete prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions. Analyzes data and recommends modifications to components or test procedure to meet desired specifications. This is a highly skilled non exempt role and typically has a clearance (depending on program assignment), is deployed to multiple programs and must be able to perform more than one of the following duties: mechanical technician, engineering technician, electronic technician, flight test technician and/or general technician duties.

Provides machining and technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy,   model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

Required experience:

  • 2 year degree in an accredited Machine Tool program or 6 years relevant experience

  • Operation and general maintenance of manual mills, lathes, surface grinder, and bandsaw.

  • Ability to program and set-up 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC lathes, mills and wire EDM using MasterCAM, Creo Manufacturing or experience with other CAM systems. It is expected to become fluent in all CNC equipment.

  • Knowledge of GD&T and how to use inspection equipment such as micrometers, calipers, various dial indicators, gage pins, gage blocks, vision system and pitch mics.

  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software such as Creo, Solidworks, AutoCAD, etc.

  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes

  • Must be able to identify tooling needed for current projects, estimate and order material required and source outside vendors for operations that cannot be done inhouse.

  • Work with engineers and other technicians to identify manufacturing problems and provide solutions to meet test dates. Must work well with others and be willing to share and listen to ideas.

  • Ability to read and understand complex mechanical drawings and have a strong mechanical aptitude.

  • This is a non-production machine shop so the ability to move from 1 machine to another is critical.

  • Knowledge of material properties to select materials suitable for assigned tasks. Give suggestions on alternate materials if needed.


Salary Range: $73,500 USD - $122,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
