The Naval & Oceanic Systems business unit headquartered in Annapolis, MD is seeking dependable individuals willing to work in a collaborative environment and that are interested in expanding their horizons. The Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer with a thermal analysis and design background to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.

Essential Functions:

Perform thermal analysis of electronics, cooling systems, and fluid systems considering conduction, convection, and radiation.  Design thermal management systems including, conduction cooling systems, refrigerant-based cooling systems, closed-loop fluid systems, and closed loop ventilation systems.  Design and perform tests to validate or troubleshoot thermal performance.  Experience with analysis tools such as Matlab, MathCAD, and thermal analysis tools such as IcePak, CFDesign, Simcenter Flow/Thermal, and ANSYS/APDL is highly desirable.  Experience with undersea vehicle and system design is highly desirable.  Successful candidate will be expected to provide technical leadership to the department in all areas of thermal analysis and be able to lead a team of analysts and designers to support a program’s thermal management needs. Ensure that designs meet program requirements and are consistent with program schedule and budget objectives.

The candidate must be able to collaborate in a team environment, prioritize and adjust tasks to accomplish the project result, prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously, and comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Basic Qualifications for a Staff Engineer Thermal:

  • BS degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace. or equivalent STEM) and a minimum of 14 years of experience in thermal analysis or MS degree with 12 years of experience
  • Proficiency with thermal analysis tools and thermal loads calculations
  • Proficiency in using common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools.
  • US citizen and ability to obtain clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment where multiple projects are being developed and deployed simultaneously
  • Proficient in the following multi-disciplined areas: pump and piping analysis and system design, manufacturing techniques, and integration and test.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance

Salary Range: $149,000 USD - $223,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
