The Payload and Ground Systems organization within the Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. Northrop Grumman is seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal Operations Ground Controller to support our team in Aurora, CO. This position is for a full-time technical role. The candidate will provide mission operations and ground system support. They will work with operational team members and system engineers to maintain and update operational documentation. This is a 2nd shift position (6pm-2am MST, Mon-Fri) and could include weekends and holidays.

The successful candidate will be expected to:


• Act as a ground systems engineer in support of the program particularly with respect to ongoing Tech Refresh efforts.
• Support update of Test Plans and Test Procedures for any new features or updates to the ground system
• Interface with ground system subcontractor in support of the rolling tech refresh effort
• Provide mission operations support to the program including flight control and mission planning.
• Support system maintenance activities such as procedure updates, architecture upkeep, and formal program milestones.
• Work with systems engineers to conduct anomaly review board investigations as necessary.
• Conduct testing using simulators and resolve discrepancies.
• Develop and test command procedures, telemetry pages, and other products derived from vendor provided documentation
• Support operations readiness activities including configuration control board and other customer meetings
• Support operations, including shift work
• Monitor vehicle state of health across all subsystems and perform short and long-term telemetry trending.
• Track space vehicle configuration, to include both hardware, software, and configurable item parameters.
• Make modifications to existing operations procedures to incorporate lessons learned from in-flight performance. Develop new procedures as required.
• Provide status reporting through both the functional and program reporting branches.
• Maintain standards associated with the established Integrated/Developmental Operations functional group processes.
• Support internal and external customer meetings through proficient verbal and documented (MS PowerPoint, MS Word, MS Excel) communications.
• May require travel ~ 10% of the time for support of customer or backup mission operations center.

This requisition may be filled at a higher job grade based on the qualifications listed below.

This requisition may be filled as either a Principal or a Sr. Principal Operational Ground Controller.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Operational Ground Controller:

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience; 3 years of relevant experience with a Masters; 0 years with a PhD. An additional 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Must have a current Top Secret with SCI eligibility and willingness to sit for a poly
  • Must be willing to support shift work, including occasional weekends.
  • Willing to learn how to conduct short and long-term telemetry modeling.
  • Maintain existing operations procedures up-to-date to also include lessons learned from real-time performance.
  • Develop new procedures as required.
  • Interface with program and customer personnel.
  • Hands on experience developing and performing real-time executable mission plans.
  • Familiarity with Remote Ground Stations, Mission Planning Systems, and Satellite Operations
  • Familiarity with Mission Operations Centers architectures and interfaces.
  • Familiarity with Ground Control Planning / Scheduling software

  • Bachelor's degree and 9 years of relevant experience; 7 years of relevant experience with a Masters; 4 years with a PhD. An additional 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Must have a current Top Secret with SCI eligibility and willingness to sit for a poly
  • Must be willing to support shift work, including occasional weekends.
  • Willing to learn how to conduct short and long-term telemetry modeling.
  • Maintain existing operations procedures up-to-date to also include lessons learned from real-time performance.
  • Develop new procedures as required.
  • Interface with program and customer personnel.
  • Hands on experience developing and performing real-time executable mission plans.
  • Familiarity with Remote Ground Stations, Mission Planning Systems, and Satellite Operations
  • Familiarity with Mission Operations Centers architectures and interfaces.
  • Familiarity with Ground Control Planning / Scheduling software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current TS/SCI will polygraph
  • Proficient performing and executing ground controller Mission Operations Center (MOC) command and control, short and long term telemetry modeling, and experience with commercial or government ground management, monitoring, and control software.
  • Current experience conducting Mission Operations Centers architectures and interfaces
  • Current experience as a ground control engineer for
  • Detailed familiarity with space system operational documentation.
  • Proficient with Ground Control Planning / Scheduling software
  • Mentor newer members of the operations team.


Salary Range: $88,000 USD - $132,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $109,100 USD - $163,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
