Northrop Grumman in Azusa specializes in Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) space programs that delivers timely, reliable, and accurate missile warning and infrared surveillance information to key decision makers. The programs enhance global missile launch detection capability, support the nation's missile defense system, expand the country’s technical intelligence gathering capacity and bolster situational awareness for warfighters on the battlefield.

Northrop Grumman in Azusa, CA is seeking a Staff (Level 5) Technologist for multiple Internal Research and Development (IRAD) projects aimed at developing future technology for space-based payloads. These IRAD projects are defining the future of Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) hardware, along with the architectures they will support.  Key responsibilities involve setting IRAD goals that align with business needs, maturation of early-stage technologies, demonstrated experience in modern programming languages (MATLAB, Python, C++), leading multi-disciplinary research teams, and providing technical guidance to junior engineers. This role will report on-site daily, but we can accommodate partial teleworking based upon business/program demand.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field & 14 years of related technical engineering experience, OR a Master’s Degree in a STEM field & 12 years of related technical engineering experience, OR a PhD in a STEM field & 9 years of related technical engineering experience
  • Familiar with working in engineering lab/technology development environment with hands-on hardware experience
  • Experienced in setting IRAD goals and milestones that align with business needs
  • Experienced leading IRAD teams and providing technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a DoD secret security clearance (US Citizenship Required)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current & active DoD security clearance
  • Experienced/familiar with mathematical modeling of optical systems, electrical instruments, tracking algorithms, or related fields
  • Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, C++, or related
  • Familiar with modern software processes and infrastructure, e.g. Agile, DevOps

Salary Range: $156,000 USD - $234,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
