Northrop Grumman Space Systems sector is seeking a Chief Technologist out of our Azusa, CA our Boulder, CO campus. The Chief Technologist will join our team of qualified, diverse individuals who support our Strategic Force Programs.  This position will predominantly report on-site daily, but we can accommodate a partial hybrid schedule, that is dependent upon business/program need.

The Chief Technologist role for Strategic Force Programs (SFP) will be primarily located in Azusa, CA or Boulder, CO. This role requires a combination Chief Engineer expertise, program portfolio management skills, and a passion for technical innovation and customer interaction.  The candidate will be the main technical focal point for internal and external customers on proposals and research project execution. The domain expertise areas of interest for this role include Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR), active and pass Electro-Optical and Infrared (EOIR), microwave sensing technology, ground system architectures, algorithm design and implementation, space payloads, mission architecture design, and mission system engineering. 

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record transitioning innovations to production programs.  As SFP’s technology strategy leader, the candidate will oversee the Internal Research & Development (IRAD) portfolio, guide Customer-funded Research & Development (IRAD) efforts, and build actionable long-term technology roadmaps. 

The Chief Technologist will manage the ~$10M/yr IRAD budget, mentor principal investigators,  and maintain investment alignment with SFP’s priorities.  The Chief Technologist will identify Customer-Funded Research & Development (CRAD) opportunities and support technical interchanges with and proposals to DARPA, AFRL, and similar government agencies.  The Chief Technologist will drive the adoption of risk-appropriate technology innovations into our programs and proposals.  The ideal candidate has a proven track record identifying opportunities in multiple technology areas, delivering proposals, and capturing new R&D programs.

The Chief Technologist will expand SFP’s thought leadership position.  The candidate is expected to increase the quantity and impact of publications and increase our presence at technical conferences.  The candidate, with support from the business development team, is expected to build relationships with influential customer peers. 

The Chief Technologist will support the Engineering organization in strengthening SFP’s R&D capabilities and identifying the critical skills needed for program success.  The candidate will identify technology gaps and innovation opportunities that can create competitive advantage.  The candidate will work closely with program office leadership and the business development team to use technology roadmaps to influence future acquisitions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field & 10+ years of related experience
  • 5+ years of leadership experience (people, teams, programs)
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a DoD TS/SCI security clearance (US Citizenship Required)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in a STEM field
  • 12+ years of related experience
  • Current & active DoD security clearance

Salary Range: $155,400 USD - $233,200 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
