Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join its Structural Analysis team within the Hardware Organization as part of the iReturn Program.  This position is located in Linthicum, Maryland.

The qualified applicant will join a iReturn cohort of employees re-entering the workforce after a career break of at least two years. This cohort will receive special on-boarding designed to provide an effective re-entry into the workforce. iReturn provides experienced professionals with a 12-week "returnship" to prepare for a full-time career in one of several fields at Northrop Grumman through training, professional development and networking opportunities. Qualified applicants will join a cohort of employees returning to the workforce after a 2+ career break for this "returnship" program that focuses on giving you a seamless transition back into the workforce. This cohort program will approximately run from late January to early May and prepare candidates for an effective re-entry into the workforce. Upon completion of the program, candidates will be eligible for full-time roles with the company.

This position includes performing structural analysis on aerospace, shipboard, ground based, and space radar systems and structures.  The tasks will encompass loads development, stress analysis (static and fatigue), and vibration analysis of metallic and composite structures.  Experience performing classical structural analysis and finite element analysis of complex problems is essential.  Both written and verbal communication skills are important for clear presentation of results through reports and presentations.  Candidate must be able to collaborate in a team environment, mentor less experienced personnel, prioritize and organize tasks to support program milestones, and prioritize multiple program responsibilities to accomplish them simultaneously. 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering.
  • Typical minimum structural analysis experience / education: 9 years with Bachelors in Science; 7 years with Masters.
  • 2 year career minimum career break
  • Classical structural and finite element analysis including static, non-linear, modal, and vibration analysis.
  • Awareness for cost reduction and structural efficiency.
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance per business requirements.
  • Software experience: Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Develop Finite Element Models (FEM) at the detail and assembly levels.
  • Structural project leadership or stress team leadership experience, with oversight of multiple analysts.
  • Comfort with presentation to internal and external customers.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Active Secret/Top Secret/SCI clearance.
  • Software experience: MSC Patran/Nastran or NX CAE/Nastran
  • Experience with structural test applications.
  • Experience with DOD and/or FAA program structural load environmental requirements.
  • Highly qualified candidates will be considered for the upper level position.
  • Experience performing electronic component solder joint fatigue/durability analysis.
