Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems is seeking a Lead Production Automation Engineer to sustain industrial solutions for a wide range of manufacturing applications. Areas of focus include microelectronics, antenna assembly, mechanical assembly and fabrication, test and surface mount technology.  

Under general supervision of the Automation Manager and Factory Automation leads, the Production Automation Lead:

  • Modifies and tests PLC software, Robot Programs, Conveyor systems, and control hardware and systems
  • Works as a member of a project team and coordinates work with others.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains products/equipment
  • Trains employees, identifies, analyzes, and repairs product failures, orders and replaces parts as needed
  • Determines and recommends which products or services best fit the customers’ needs
  • Contributes to new system concepts and customer contact
  • Performs site installations and start-ups, achieves an on-time completion of project within project budget

  • You will be a key team member for ensuring and improving process and factory performance.
  • You will be part of the Manufacturing Automation and Controls team that is pursuing sector Automation and Industry 4.0/Digital Thread efforts. This includes interfacing with the teams developing the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and our Plant Connectivity and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) infrastructure. 
  • You will use your innovation and creativity to design automation solutions that will revolutionize manufacturing execution and have a sector level impact 

 

The Automation Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the tasks outlined below:  

  • Performs in-house testing on control components and systems
  • Understanding of Preventative Maintenance as it relates to production systems  
  • Create, modify, and troubleshoot programming for Fanuc, ABB, & UR Robots/Cobots 
  • Assists with panel wiring and mechanical assembly to meet project schedules 
  • Supports customer training efforts
  • Meets project schedules
  • Provides manufacturing manager and lead project engineer with timely status reports of projects
  • Maintains a strong company presence and positive working relationship with customers, subcontractors, vendors and co-workers to sustain automated systems
  • Independently constructs or designs equipment with use of PLC, BUS-Systems, Network Technology, Mechanical Components, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems and Cooling/Lubrication Systems 
  • Identifies and analyzes errors and malfunctions as they relate to: Intermittent/inconsistent electrical and mechanical failures on production equipment; PLC’s, 24v control circuits, 480v 3phase systems, 4-20ma circuits, VFD’s, PC controllers, and fieldbus technology/control technology 
  • Travels as required (which will be 10% or less) to complete project and service tasks

This job may be filled as a Principal or a Senior Principal based on the qualifications below.


Basic Qualifications for a Principal: 

  • Bachelors of Science degree or higher in Engineering or related STEM area plus 5 years of relevant professional experience (3 years with an MS degree) 
  • Experience troubleshooting/repairing Robotics and Controls, using a wide variety of Discrete I/O, Analog I/O, and communications to I/O data that can be transmitted or received to/from other controllers and devices via industrial communication protocols 
  • Must have fluency in MS Office software applications 
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.)

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal: 

  • Bachelors of Science degree or higher in Engineering or related STEM area plus 9 years of relevant professional experience (7 years with an MS degree) 
  • Experience troubleshooting/repairing Robotics and Controls, using a wide variety of Discrete I/O, Analog I/O, and communications to I/O data that can be transmitted or received to/from other controllers and devices via industrial communication protocols 
  • Must have fluency in MS Office software applications 
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical/Mechanical controls enclosure knowledge 
  • Experience programming Fanuc Robots 
  • Experience sending PLC data to servers (for example Open Platform Communications (OPC), OPC Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) and Structured Query Language (SQL) servers) 
  • Automotive Manufacturing experience 
  • Ignition SCADA experience 
  • Electronic component manufacturing  
  • Understanding of machine vision and deep learning applications

 

MANUMS


Salary Range: $88,000 USD - $132,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $109,100 USD - $163,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
