Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector is seeking a Quality Engineering Manager to lead our team of qualified and diverse individuals at our Amherst Systems Operating Unit (OU) located in Buffalo, NY.

This Quality Engineering Leader is responsible for managing the Quality Engineering site functions. The Quality Engineering Manager provides the required independent quality oversight for the respective system designs, product builds, testing, integration and support required for the Amherst Systems OU it serves. The Quality Engineering Manager reports to the OU Mission Assurance (MA) manager.

As a key leader, partner and essential member of the OU MA leadership team, the Quality Engineering Manager will lead a high performing Quality team and will be responsible for executing, monitoring and reporting on the health and quality of products and services. The qualified candidate will have demonstrated success leading OU and Program projects and task assigned to the organizational group within cost and schedule while achieving a high level of employee engagement. The position requires a solution-based orientation, unwavering ethics and values, and the demonstrated ability to be a trusted partner. Candidates must demonstrate a proven track record of solving complex problems through systematic and objective evaluation of information resulting in effective communication, championing, and implementation of change with a diverse set of internal and external customers and suppliers. Drives and implements industry practices and strategies of where Mission Assurance and Quality are going from a near and long-term perspective.

The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge of end-to-end program lifecycles and hands-on experience managing the quality process in every phase of a technical program through delivery of a product.  The ability to integrate, engage, and lead a team to perform at top level of performance; improve the team dynamic; the ability to leverage experience/background to bring alternative ideas/solutions to the team.  Will have strong partnership/collaboration skills; demonstrated ability to partner cross-IPT/cross-discipline within a team and the ability to develop and present material outside the immediate work function.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Leads Quality Engineering operations that includes administration of budgets, schedules, and performance standards
  • Collaborates with engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure quality standards are in place.
  • Devises and implements methods and procedures for inspecting, testing and evaluating the precision and accuracy of products and production equipment.
  • Designs and analyzes inspection and testing processes, mechanisms and equipment; conducts quality assurance tests; and performs statistical analysis to assess the cost of and determine the responsibility for, products or materials that do not meet required standards and specifications.
  • Audits quality systems for deficiency identification and correction. Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards and that documentation is compliant with requirements.
  • Assures compliance in quality, risk management, safety, and process improvement in accordance with contractual requirements and drives forward early predictive indicators of risk.

  • Leverages comprehensive metrics, customer and employee feedback to assess program performance and risks, and determines resources to ensure mission success.
  • Sets the strategy to meet customer’s expectations, regularly communicates program status. Provides situational awareness and executive level communication both internally and externally.
  • Promotes the professional development of the Quality and Mission Excellence workforce and fosters a collaborative culture that sustains the momentum around employee engagement and inclusion, affordability, innovation, value growth and continuous improvement.
  • Provides clear assignments, helps employees connect their efforts to the bigger picture, creates an inclusive work environment characterized by mutual respect and the valuing of differences, and builds a culture that motivates employees to their highest levels of performance. Influences Leadership development with the focus on strong succession planning and strategic leadership movement and partners with Business leaders to build the leadership depth that supports our Quality Succession Planning process.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in an STEM/technical discipline
  • 5+ years of experience within Quality, Quality Engineering, Program Management or Engineering (3+ years experience with a Master’s)
  • Experience in leading teams
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOD Secret Clearance or Top Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in an STEM/technical discipline
  • 3+ years of direct management experience within Quality, Quality Engineering, Program Management or Engineering
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 / AS9100 Quality Management System certification process
  • Defense Industry experience as a Program or Project Manager, Quality Manager, Engineering Manager or Manufacturing Management
  • Lean / Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification to drive continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to apply strong analytical skills
  • Possess active DOD Secret Clearance or Top Secret clearance.


Salary Range: 88100 - 132100

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
