Northrop Grumman Space Systems is searching for an Principal Engineer Mechanical to join the Research & Development team within Launch Vehicles at the Chandler AZ facility.

The Principal Engineer Mechanical will be experienced in problem solving, out-of-the-box thinking, and who is passionate about advancing technologies from cradle to wide-spread use.  This individual must be self-motivated and naturally curious while able to work with a team on a common goal.

Current team applications include vibration attenuation, thermal protection, optimized strength to weight ratio, advancements in polymer properties, radiation shielding, and digital simulation.  The team is dedicated to being a resource for fleet improvement with an emphasis on Mechanical Engineering disciplines in a launch vehicle context.  However, advancements to the broader range of products offered by Northrop Grumman will merit attention.

Position will focus heavily on development of carbon composite layup geometries, methods, processes, optimizations, and research into property manipulation and advancement.  The planning and delegation of team tasks in analytical and experimental research balanced with small scale process development will be necessary.  Interaction with internal teams in structures, dynamics, instrumentation, test, and manufacturing will be common, as well as with external customers and technology vendors.

Ideal candidate will have technical knowledge and experience with carbon composites, resins, pre-preg layups, etc in aerospace applications.  A research background in technologies such as composites, polymer science, resin systems, Additive Manufacturing, spin forming, Carbon or Boron Nitride Nano Tubes, graphene, or advanced materials is desirable.  Experience with research documentation and presentations, as well as academic literature surveys is a plus.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science Engineering degree plus 5 years of experience; Masters degree plus 3 years or PhD plus 0 years.

Knowledge in carbon composites

U.S. Citizenship is required

Ability to obtain Secret Security Clearance

Available to travel 0-10%

Proficient in MS PowerPoint, Excel, and Word

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters or PhD

8 years of mechanical engineering or similar experience with Bachelors of Science, 6 years with Masters, or 3 years with PhD is preferred

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to present to experienced and demanding customer community

Familiarity with MS Project or similar

Familiarity with Matlab, Python, Linux

Active Secret Security Clearance

Salary Range: 79700 - 119500

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
