Northrop Grumman Space Components Division in Commerce, CA, designs high performance pressure vessels for space flight applications. We are seeking a highly motivated Principal Design Engineer or Senior Principal Design Engineer for pressure vessels assemblies to join our design engineering team.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for development of flight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and delivery under the supervision of senior staff
  • Responsible for the design of major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations
  • Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) equipment, develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals to internal and external customers
  • Create layouts and drawings of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures
  • Investigate pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost
  • Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning (GD&T)
  • Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommend revisions and/or improvements in design layout to fellow responsible engineers or designers
  • Support development of technical solutions to complex problems which require regular use of ingenuity and creativity
  • Support proposal efforts and business development activities
  • Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Analysis, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)
  • Assist in assessment and disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomalies

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal Design Engineer level or a Senior Principal Design Engineer level

Basic Qualifications for Principal Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years of mechanical engineering experience or aerospace engineering experience, or a Master's degree with 3 years of stated experience
  • CAD solid modeling and drafting experience
  • Experienced with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with GD&T best practices per ASME Y14.5
  • Preparation and release of engineering drawings to industry standards
  • Experience with Configuration Management process for drawing release
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing best practices, including at least one of the following areas: machining, welding, and/or assembly
  • Understanding of industry standards and specifications

Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree with 9 years of mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering experience, or a Master's degree with 7 years of stated experience
  • CAD solid modeling and drafting experience
  • Experienced with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with GD&T best practices per ASME Y14.5
  • Preparation and release of engineering drawings to industry standards
  • Experience with Configuration Management process for drawing release
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing best practices, including at least one of the following areas: machining, welding, and/or assembly
  • Understanding of industry standards and specifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in an aerospace manufacturing facility
  • Experience with pressure vessel design and analysis
  • Experience with machining and welding of Titanium and Titanium Alloys
  • Experience with composites and adhesives
  • Experience with Teamcenter or equivalent drawing configuration management suite
  • Experience with NX CAD Software
  • Expertise in Aerospace industry standards and specifications and application to space flight components and drawings

Salary Range: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
