The Northrop Grumman Commerce facility is the leading supplier of pressure vessels for space missions in the world. Part of Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division, we design and manufacture high performance pressure vessels for use in space applications.  We produce a wide variety of pressure vessels supporting a wide variety of missions, both foreign and domestic, commercial, defense, and civil space.  We are seeking a Principal Tooling Engineer for the Design Engineering team in Commerce California, to support the manufacturing team.  This position reports to the Manager of Design and Tool Engineering.

Responsibilities include:

  • Development of tooling from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and delivery

  • Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) equipment to design of tooling and create tooling drawings to support manufacturing and integration operations for pressure vessels

  • Select adequate materials in the design of tooling to meet the technical requirements and minimize program cost and schedule impacts

  • Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommend revisions and/or improvements in tool design layout to fellow responsible engineers or designers.

  • Generate and submit purchase requisition and work with purchasing team to procure tooling utilizing new and approved vendor base

  • Generate manufacturing planning to support fabrication of tooling

  • Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Analysis, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative tool design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)

  • Support Continuous Improvement activities

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering/scientific discipline and 5-7 years of tooling design related experience

  • CAD solid modeling (experience with NX a plus) and drafting experience

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement with a focus on customer service excellence

  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Proficiency with GD&T best practices per ASME Y14.5

  • Preparation and release of engineering drawings to industry standards

  • Experience with Configuration Management process for drawing release

  • Must be a self-starter and possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • US Citizenship is a bona fide requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7+ years’ experience in an aerospace manufacturing facility

  • Experience with Teamcenter or equivalent drawing configuration management suite

  • Experience with tooling design and manufacturing in an aerospace environment

  • Experience with mechanical assemblies and poka-yoke process

  • Excellent oral and written communication, computer, documentation, and presentation skills are required

  • Ability to multi-task

  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively


Salary Range: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
