The Payload and Ground Systems Division, of Northrop Grumman's Space sector is seeking a Senior Principal Product Engineer for the Design Engineering team at Commerce, CA, where we design and manufacture high performance pressure vessels for use in space applications.  The Northrop Grumman Commerce facility is the leading supplier of pressure vessels for space missions in the world.  At the facility we produce a wide variety of pressure vessels supporting a wide variety of missions, both foreign and domestic, commercial, defense, and civil space.  This position is part of the design proposal and product engineering team and supports the business development team at the site.  This position reports to a Senior Manager of Engineering .

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible engineer for proposal and product support for all tank product lines

  • Review customer specifications for applicable requirements and select / propose relevant tank products for customer proposal efforts

  • Perform technical trade studies using customer specifications and provide summary and technical documents to support proposal efforts

  • Perform preliminary compliance assessments to customer technical documentation in support of proposal efforts

  • Perform preliminary sizing and first order estimations of tank designs and layouts

  • Coordinate with proposal and management team to develop basis of estimate and hour estimations for proposal efforts

  • Work in partnership with Engineering, Project Management, and Business Development teams to evaluate technical risks

  • Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Analysis, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify inventive design solutions that meet customer requirements (technical, cost, schedule)

  • Cooperate and coordinate with management team for proposal activities, including presenting and summarizing findings and recommendations for internal and external customer meetings

  • Support business development opportunities, including customer visits, trade shows, and industry events

  • Develop tools, templates, and guidelines to standardize engineering proposal process

  • Support team during handover of Proposals that have resulted in orders

  • Support Continuous Improvement activities

  • Travel is required for this position (0-25%)

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering/scientific discipline and seven (7-10) years of related experience

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to develop and maintain strong customer relationships

  • 1-3 years minimum experience working customer proposals and pricing efforts

  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • U.S. Citizenship is a bona fide requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5-7+ years experience with space flight hardware (design, development, and/or test)

  • 3-5+ years of proposal support

  • Experience with space propulsion products (tanks) or propulsion subsystem design

  • CAD solid modeling (experience with NX a plus) and drafting experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication, computer, documentation, and presentation skills are required

  • Ability to multi-task

  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively

Salary Range: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
