Northrop Grumman Space Systems is currently looking for an Metrology Engineer/Principal Metrology Engineer to work in our Promontory, UT location.


Supports efforts to assure the quality of our final products by ensuring optimum performance of dimensional measurement devices/equipment used in product and process controls for the manufacture of critical aerospace and defense components.

You will apply sound engineering judgement, critical thinking, employ calibration assurance studies, calculate uncertainty budgets, execute gauge R&R studies, conduct measurement capability analysis and deploy industry best practices for calibration techniques and configuration management.  


  • Create and review calibration methods based on International and governmental standards. 
  • Coordinate and evaluate suppliers and contractors used for special calibration services
    Engineering/manufacturing technology calibration oversight
  • Programming of measurement devices involved in product
  • Process, environmental and safety controls
  • Interfaces and manipulates CMM inspection programs using PC-DMIS or Poly-Works software
  • Including set-up instructions and calibration
  • Works with tooling personnel in the use of CAD (SolidWorks) to design and develop Metrology test fixtures
  • Attend review meetings and participate in training and product knowledge sessions as required
  • Maintain engineering documentation within the MetTeam database
  • Troubleshoot instruments performing out of tolerance in order to correct and assure proper function
  • Utilize and understand instrument operating instruction and manuals to correctly diagnose and troubleshoot instrument issues
  • Assist other engineering personnel with qualification and validation of new or changed tooling or parts
  • Establish priorities of work, for self and delegated to others
  • Generate ideas and suggestions for reducing calibration turnaround time
  • Record data and results as specified in documentation procedures
  • This position requires the use math in almost every aspect of the profession, including when analyzing, designing and troubleshooting equipment, identify and analyze problems as they relate to the science of measurement and electronics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of assigned instrument, equipment and software, and relevant regulatory requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and instructions, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and standard work instructions
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations used for assigned testing
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to report data and observations accurately, both in writing and verbally
  • BS in Metrology


  • BS degree in a related technical field; technology, mechanical, manufacturing or mechanical engineering degree
  • Knowledge of measurement science, calibration theories and practices
  • Experience troubleshooting, calibrating and programming devices, machine centers, VTL’s, VBM’s, CMM’s, etc. 
  • Basic administration and computer skills required (Microsoft office) 
  • Must be able to work on feet for extended periods of time, manipulate equipment up to 50 lb, ability to climb ladders and access challenging location
  • This professional must demonstrate an understanding of electronic devices (DMM’s, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.), instrumentation devices including a Wheatstone bridge circuit (i.e. pressure sensors, load cells, positioning sensors, piezoelectric sensors, temperature sensors, etc.)  and electronic components (resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc.).
  • Understanding of how to apply statistics to ensure the proper interpretation of data
  • Intermediate programming experience in C++, Visual Basic, Python or similar programing language.


  • BS degree in Metrology or related engineering discipline (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Material Science) and 2 years experience
  • Position can be filled one level higher, BS & 5 years’ experience or MS & 3 years’ experience

    Salary Range: $53,500 USD - $80,300 USD
    Salary Range 2: $64,600 USD - $97,000 USD

    Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
