Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsion Division has a need for a Sr. Principal Project Engineer to support the Vision for Innovative Propulsion and Enabler Roadmaps (VIPER) Internal Research and Development (IRAD) program. Primary work locations will be at our Bacchus (Magna) & Promontory, UT offices.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The qualified engineer will serve as a project engineer supporting various IPTs for the VIPER Program.  The selected candidate will perform analysis and lead projects in service of:

  • Monitors schedule control points and support adjudication of pressures between IPTs.

  • Partners with IPT Leads and CAMs to ensure schedule execution to plan.

  • Monitors GFx dependencies with the government and G/R dependencies across IPTs within their MPE.

  • Continuously assesses executability of the plan and identifying, characterizing, and managing risk

  • Champions opportunity identification and proactively look for opportunities to gain schedule margin.

  • Participates in and supporting baseline change board activities relative to their respective MPE Supporting/brokering cross-IPT MPE integration.

  • Participates in agile engineering activities in planning, execution, and retrospectives

  • Supports/attends major supplier activities for critical MPE drivers.

  • Monitors and supports IMP execution. 

  • Facilitates enabling smooth and integrated collaboration and communication among product teams and program

  • Assists with project reporting, planning, forecasting, supporting proposals, metrics creation, analysis, process creation, documentation, and regular status briefs for major milestones

  • Provide technical integration support across IPTs and across IWOs to ensure all major milestones and programmatic requirements are met

  • Supports creating metrics and enhancements to present program status

Skills & Qualifications:

A candidate qualified for this position should have the following demonstrated skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) discipline with 9 years of related experience; OR a Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline with 7 years of experience; OR a PhD in a STEM discipline with 4 years of experience.

  • 2+ years’ experience in Program Planning or engineering working on program planning activities for complex programs.

  • Experience assimilating information from multiple sources, creating coherent plans and experience executing those plans.

  • Project management and earned-value management (EVM) experience and experience applying EVM application to complex projects.

  • Basic understanding of rocket propulsion, fluid mechanics, and structural analysis sufficient to facilitate system integration with technical SMEs

These qualifications are nice to have:

  • Experience in a government contractor manufacturing or engineering development environment. 

  • Experience leading program teams through baseline planning activities.

  • Experience managing givers/receivers across subcontractors, IPTs, and customers.

  • Experience with IMS structure design and integration process across a complex program with multiple subcontractors and IPTs. 

  • Experience with Monte Carlo schedule risk assessments and analysis.

  • Experience managing givers/receivers across subcontractors, IPTs, and customers.

  • Experience with baseline planning activities.

  • Experience applying integrated program planning and management methodologies within an Earned Value (EVMS) environment on a complex program with multiple IPTs and subcontractors.

  • Experience with Oracle Primavera P6 software. 

  • Experience in Aerospace and/or Defense programs and familiarity with Integrated Program Management Report (IPMR) or Integrated Program Management Data and Analysis Report (IPMDAR).

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

  • Strong critical thinking and logical reasoning skills with the ability to solve issues and predict potential programmatic and technical risks.

  • Operate independently with limited supervision, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, peers, and customers.

  • Experience working in agile engineering programs or agile engineering training


Salary Range: $108,600 USD - $163,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
