Northrop Grumman's Space Systems - Propulsions Division is currently seeking a Structural Design/Principal Structural Design Engineer for our Metal Structures/Joints and Seals team in our Promontory, UT offices.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Structural Design Engineer is responsible for aiding the development of hardware design of flight and static test hardware for rocket motor metal components and related structures:

  • Contribute to major design activities and coordinate technical efforts

  • Create designs for future rocket motor metal products and joints and seals

  • Develop engineering documentation products (drawings, specifications, design and analysis reports, test plans, test reports, etc.)

  • Oversee and plan testing for development and qualification of flight hardware products

Job Duties:                        

  • Design major rocket motor metal components

  • Design associated components and structures to achieve lowest cost from design and lean manufacturing principles

  • Plan and oversee material characterization testing of materials used in the design of rocket structures

  • Perform simple joints/seals analysis to support the design of flight hardware and test articles using especially designed tools

  • Perform assessment and develop disposition of discrepant hardware (MRB) and hardware anomalies

  • Create engineering drawings and specifications to define design for hardware fabrication, write test plans, support fabrication efforts, oversee testing, analyze test data and make revisions to design based on results

  • Create and maintain standard design processes

Experience Preferred:

  • Knowledgeable of NG/SP engineering drafting process is a plus

  • Experience in metal forging processes is a plus

  • Experience in machine shop operations is a plus

  • Knowledgeable of Siemens NX is a plus

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Broad understanding of metallic materials/structures in design and processing

  • Strong skills in CAD including GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis and drawing preparation skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Detail oriented but able to understand the big picture


  • BS/MS degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering required.

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Civil Engineering and 2 years experience or 0 years with an MS

  • Position can be filled 1 level higher, 5 years with a BS or 3 years with a MS

Salary Range: $71,000 USD - $106,700 USD
Salary Range 2: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
