AOA Xinetics (AOX), a wholly owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division Strategic Business Venture, is a leading supplier of complex electro-optic and photonic systems and subsystems that control and manipulate light waves for a variety of applications. We are currently seeking a n Opto-Mechanical Engineer to support our Xinetics program activities in Devens, MA.

Position Description:

The Senior Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer will perform Mechanical Design and Analysis for space, ground and airborne optical systems, tooling, and test equipment, leading engineering design efforts of complex electro-optical and opto-mechanical systems, designing hardware that satisfies system requirements, documenting design approaches, detailing parts and assembly drawings to support the development, manufacture, and test of optical systems. Additional expectations include support to new business opportunities and active leadership and development of junior engineers, designers and technicians.  The Opto- Mechanical Engineer will report to the Xinetics Engineering Manager.

This position may be filled at either the Principal or Senior Principal Level

Role and Responsibilities:

  • With minimal guidance, perform opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering on multiple projects through all phases of development and manufacturing.

  • Create part and assembly models, detailed drawings and associated parts lists, in accordance with AMSE Y14.5 and AOX drawing standards.

  • Conduct peer reviews of other engineer’s work products

  • Execute new optical designs with a focus on DFM

  • Perform analysis of optics, mounting strategies, detailed geometric tolerances, manufacturability, and cost

  • Support transition to production and manufacturing engineering

  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems which require regular use of technical acumen, ingenuity and creativity.

  • Perform trade studies, design of experiments, assembly and testing of parts, components, and assemblies

  • Travel to customer and supplier sites as required

  • Provide technical content for proposals, estimate and track mechanical design costs, create schedule estimates, and make presentations to customers and company management.

Basic Qualifications for Principal (level 3):

  • Bachelors in Science in Physics, Mechanical or Optical Engineering

  • 5+ years hands-on opto-mechanical design and development in DoD or related industry.

  • Understanding of mechanical and opto-mechanical best practices and basic understanding of the other engineering disciplines

  • Proficient with opto-mechanical analysis and FEA

  • Knowledge of various adhesive applications and bonding techniques in opto-mechanical designs

  • Working knowledge of optical assy/ alignment/ test equipment/ tools

  • Able to analyze, problem solve, multi-task and meet deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written skills

  • Results-oriented with strong personal drive and ownership in meeting commitments

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude

  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and SolidWorks (or equivalent) design and analysis

  • US Citizenship is a bona-fide requirement

Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal (Level 4):

  • Bachelors in Science in Physics, Mechanical or Optical Engineering

  • 9+ years hands-on opto-mechanical design and development in DoD or related industry.

  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical and opto-mechanical best practices and basic understanding of the other engineering disciplines

  • Proficient with opto-mechanical analysis and FEA

  • Experience in lens and mirror mounting techniques – large and small

  • Flexure and kinematic mount design

  • Knowledge of various adhesive applications and bonding techniques in opto-mechanical designs

  • Working knowledge of optical assy/ alignment/ test equipment/ tools

  • Able to analyze, problem solve, multi-task and meet deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written skills

  • Results-oriented with strong personal drive and ownership in meeting commitments

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Able to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision

  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude

  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and SolidWorks (or equivalent) design and analysis

  • US Citizenship is a bona fide requirement


Salary Range: $101,400 USD - $152,200 USD
Salary Range 2: $125,800 USD - $188,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
