AOA Xinetics (AOX), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division Strategic Business Venture, is a leading supplier of complex electro-optic and photonic systems and subsystems that control and manipulate light waves for a variety of applications. We are seeking a Manager, Chief Engineer to support our operations in Devens, MA.

Overview

The Chief Engineers (CE) are the technical leaders for all engineering program and pre-program activities.  The Chief Engineers plan, manage and balance engineering technical, cost and schedule performance of AOX’s projects.  They coordinate proposal efforts, requirements development, hardware/software design, risk management, integration, verification, and validation activities.  The Chief Engineers ensure that the program is adhering to sound engineering principles and processes in the development, production, test and sustainment of products for our customers in compliance with company policies and procedures. In addition to leading the engineering team, the Chief Engineers interface with program management, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, suppliers and other partners.   The Chief Engineer serves as the primary customer technical point of contact, and ensures that customer requirements and deliverables are met.  

Position Description

The Chief Engineering Manager (CEM) leads a team of Chief Engineers to ensure that the overall chief engineering mission is being executed.   The CEM partners with the business and technology leaders to establish project designs and structures, identify solutions that meet customer needs, execute programs according to plan, and provide technical leadership continuity from concept to production. The CEM and the CE team are critical customer technical partners who coordinate with the different organizational groups to ensure customer requirements are met.

A key job function of the CEM includes technical business development.  The CEM is the glue that binds business and technology leadership, and the customer community.  The CEM works directly with customers and technology leaders to identify technical solutions that enable customer mission success.   These solutions shape the technology/product roadmap which guide internal investment (IRAD, CAPEX).  The CEM and their CE’s lead the technical team and technology leaders to mature these system architecture/designs that ultimately garner customer interest to the point of turning these seed development efforts into programs of record.  The Chief Engineering Manager will report directly to the AOX Engineering Director.

  • Ensures staffing needs are identified in conjunction with program management

  • Works with functions to ensure appropriate staffing is assigned

Special Assignments – Provide tactical leadership as required on high profile activities or issues

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Engineering or Physics, with 10+ years System requirements team/project management experience (SEIT)

  • 5+ years of Systems Engineering/Architecture development skills working with optical, mechanical, and electrical systems and/or components and strong knowledge of optical and photonics principles and applications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing a diverse engineering team on technical efforts

  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) experience

  • Experience working in a Space Systems design or similar/related work environment

  • Program Review preparation and presentation skills

  • Advanced analytical and root cause/continuous improvement skills

  • Effective verbal/written communication skills with the proven ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders

  • Advanced MS Office skills (Power Point, Excel, Word, MS Project, Outlook)

  • U.S. Citizenship is a bona fide requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Engineering, Business Management or MBA

  • System Engineering interdisciplinary tools, principles, and practices (SETDB, INCOSE, PPI)

  • Experience working in Semiconductor Fab and/or COTs product development work environment

  • Knowledge/experience working with electrostrictive ceramic materials Knowledge/experience with control of adaptive optical systems including adaptive optics, fast steering mirrors, gimbal systems, jitter/beamwalk controls (interferometric) and/or deformable mirrors

  • Use of first-order mathematical modeling and simulations to assess feasibility, compare technologies and validate experimental results


Salary Range: $130,500 USD - $195,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
