Northrop Grumman Tactical Space is looking for a Simulation Software Engineering Functional Manager to manage a department of simulation software engineers and other managers.

The selected candidate will be responsible for leading the technical performance of the Simulation team, establish policies and procedures to institutionalize standard practices to control and reduce costs, review and approve proposal inputs and provide career planning guidance and mentorship to the department.

The primary location for this position is Dulles, Virginia. There is no opportunity to telecommute for this position.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • The Manager is expected to be familiar with modeling and simulation software.
  • Candidates will plan, organize and be involved in the full software lifecycle to deliver spacecraft simulation software to end users based on the established best practices.
  • Responsibilities include leading a team of managers and/or engineers developing models to support modeling and simulation activities across numerous programs.
  • The ideal candidate will have expertise in C++ programming, be knowledgeable on the development and use of simulation models of sensors, actuators and space environments to demonstrate closed-loop spacecraft system performance and general integration and test of aerospace systems.
  • Management responsibilities include providing technical and strategic direction, coordination of assignments, hiring of new staff, and networking with Program Office and key stakeholders to identify opportunities and issues where the department needs to prioritize resources to address business demands.
  • Additionally, the Manager will pursue research and development efforts to improve the organization’s products, tools and processes.
  • Functional management responsibilities are expected to be about 30% of this Manager's time, with the remaining time focused on direct program technical leadership to ensure the delivery of products are completed within the cost and schedule of the program IMS and meet the customer requirements.
  • The selected candidate will clearly demonstrate strong leadership skills and will have a track record as an effective communicator and problem solver who is able to develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • The Manager will operate in a team environment and collaborate across the sector business areas as required to accomplish team and department goals.
  • The candidate will clearly demonstrate their ability to functionally lead a team of engineers and other managers to strategically meet the directorate objectives and goals.

Specific management responsibilities include:

  • Hire to meet growing demands and back-fill positions as required through recruiting and retention
  • Training, mentoring and coaching of both technical and non-technical skills, career guidance and goal-setting
  • Managing compensation evaluations and coordination through our Performance Management process
  • Workload planning/forecasting as well as new business development
  • Develop advanced techniques for solving guidance and navigation problems
  • Interact internally with engineering team and/or with suppliers, vendors or customers for basic problem resolution
  • Establish policies and procedures to improve the operation of the department and delivery products in a more cost effective manner
  • Establish and maintain a simulation technology roadmap that can be used as a source for IRAD projects

Specific technical responsibilities include:

  • Manage and analyze requirements and designs
  • Participate in software requirements review, preliminary and critical design reviews, integration readiness reviews and software acceptance reviews
  • Develop, test and debug simulation models, applications and test scripts in desktop computing environments
  • Make frequent contact with customers both internal and external concerning design, development and maintenance of space application software
  • Work directly with integration and test and other engineering disciplines to resolve complex spacecraft system problems
  • Use EVMS to track the status of the development of a project through its software development lifecycle

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in the STEM field is required in addition to a minimum of 9 years of professional experience (7 years with MS or 5 years with PhD)
  • Experience working within a software development environment related to modeling and simulation
  • Technical project or people leadership experience with specific demonstrated success in leading and developing cross functional teams
  • US Citizenship is required for this position as well as the ability to obtain a TS/SCI Clearance
  • Experience in the management of lower level managers and/or supervisors and the development of their leadership skills
  • Experience in the development of technical organizational strategies to support product line development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience working with C++, Python and Matlab/Simulink that demonstrates proficiency and expertise
  • System knowledge in one or more of the following domains: Spacecraft Command & Control, Mission Planning, Space Situational Awareness and Visualization
  • Experience working with 3D graphics software such as OpenGL or OpenSceneGraph plus modeling tools such as Blender - Agile Certification (PMI-ACP or AgilePM)
  • Experience usage and configuration of DevOps/CI/CD technologies (Jenkins, Ansible, Docker, etc)
  • An active TS/SCI Clearance

Salary Range: $143,500 USD - $215,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
