Northrop Grumman Tactical Space Systems Division designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

The Tactical Space Systems Division is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to assist a team of mechanical engineers to perform mechanical, systems, mechanisms, and design engineering tasks on one or more spacecraft systems or subsystems.

Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Work on Spacecraft Structures, Payload, Mechanisms, and Antenna mechanical hardware from requirements all the way through integration and test. 

  • Perform detailed design tasks using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other software tools to develop and document designs for manufacturing and ultimately assembly into spacecraft. 

  • Interfacing and communicating with customers, program and functional management, other spacecraft engineering disciplines, and component suppliers. 

  • Develop test plans and procedures and support structural testing at the Mechanisms component and spacecraft levels.

  • Perform cost and schedule planning for projects and proposals. 

  • Expected to be self-motivated and provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems under limited.

  • Skills include, but not limited to, Computer Aided Design (CAD), knowledge of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T), 3D Printing, Design for Manufacturing, and Mechanics of Metallic and Composite Materials.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications:

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal Mechanical/Mechanisms Engineer 3 or Sr. Principal Mechanical/Mechanisms Engineer 4.

Basic Qualifications: Principal Mechanical/Mechanisms Engineer 3

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area (Degrees in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering highly preferred) and 5 to 9+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 3 to 7+ years of experience; 0 years of experience with a PhD.

  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain government clearance.

  • Ability to perform engineering tasks associated with design, manufacturing, and testing of space mechanisms.

  • Previous experience with the specification, layout, design, and build of moving mechanical assemblies and/or mechanism components for space.

  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, preferably Creo Parametric.

  • Experience with cost and schedule management.

Basic Qualifications: Sr. Principal Mechanical/Mechanisms Engineer 4:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area (Degrees in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering highly preferred) and 9+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 7+ years of experience; 4+ years of experience with a PhD.

  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain government clearance.

  • Ability to perform engineering tasks associated with design, manufacturing, and testing of space mechanisms.

  • Previous experience with the specification, layout, design, and build of moving mechanical assemblies and/or mechanism components for space.

  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, preferably Creo Parametric.

  • Experience with cost and schedule management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards and preparation of manufacturing documentation.

  • Experience with mechatronic and/or precision electromechanical devices.

  • Experience with springs, moving parts, and coatings.

  • Experience with pressure systems desired but not required.

  • Experience with PTC Creo.

  • Experience processing drawings in Dulles Windchill.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience.

  • Experience with 3D Printing, Design for Manufacturing, and hands-on hardware fabrication.

  • Proficiency with analysis and simulation tools such as MATLAB, Mathcad, LabView, VB, etc.


Salary Range: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
